It’s actually more aggressive than the concept car

About one year after it was unveiled as a concept car, the Nissan GT-R50 made it into production for 2020. Built to celebrate the 50th anniversaries of Italdesign and the GT-R nameplate, the GT-R50 is a heavily redesigned R35 GT-R design by Italian design company Italdesign Giugiaro.

On top of boasting a more radical design on the outside, the GT-R50 also features a beefed-up engine that cranks out a massive 710 horsepower, more than any other GT-R built so far.

While most concept cars become milder on their way to production, Italdesign and Nissan kept the menacing looks of the show car. And this means that the GT-R50 is a notable departure from the GT-R. The front end boasts dramatic changes, starting with new headlamps that are slimmer, more angular, and fitted with thin LED strips. The upper grille retains the some of the shape and size of the stock GT-R, but the lower outlet is larger, while the inner vents have been redesigned too.

The GT-R horizontal side vents have been replaced by vertical slats, while the splitter moves upward to the sides, just like on the GT-R Nismo. The redesigned engine hood features finer character lines toward the fenders, but it now comes with cutouts that look like removable panels (even through they’re not).

Italdesign redesigned the side panels as well. There’s a new, completely vertical vent on the front fender, which looks more elegant than the original one, while the rear fenders are wider and more angular toward the C-pillars. There’s a new side skirt design too, with vertical fins behind the front wheels and a deep channel toward the rear wheel.

Move around back and you’ll notice how the rear window frame descends along the edge of the C-pillars and the around the edge of the rear fascia. The fascia itself is smaller now and finished in gloss black instead of body color. The headlamps retain the round design of the GT-R, but they feature a cool turbine-style design. Italdesign ditched the standard bumper, replacing it with a larger diffuser flanked by winglets onto the sides. The quad exhaust pipes were also replaced with a simpler, dual layout, but they’re big enough to add a racy look. Finally, the roof is carved out in the center, while the rear wing is bigger than before.

Just like the concept car, the GT-R50 doesn’t have a traditional trunk lid. However, you can store things in the back by opening the rear window upward like a regular hatch. Overall, the production model actually looks better than the concept car.

The Nissan GT-R50 by Italdesign is the most powerful GT-R yet

The GT-R50 may be powered by the same twin-turbo, 3.8-liter V-6 engine found in the regular GT-R, but it’s notably more powerful.

Thanks to upgrades like larger-diameter turbochargers, heavy-duty crankshaft, pistons, and connecting rods, and modified intake and exhaust, the mill generates a whopping 710 horsepower and 575 pound-feet of torque.

That’s notably more than the standard GT-R, which comes with 562 horsepower and 467 pound-feet on tap. Specifically, the GT-R50 benefits from an extra 148 horses and 108 pound-feet of twist.

What’s more, the GT-R50 is more powerful than the GT-R Nismo model too. The latter is rated at 591 horsepower and 481 pound-feet of torque. That’s a solid 119 horses and 94 pound-feet behind Italdesign’s model.

Official performance specs aren’t yet available, but it’s safe to say that the GT-R50 will be quicker than the regular GT-R from 0 to 60 mph. The latter hits the benchmark in 2.7 seconds. However, it remains to be seen if the GT-R50 is quicker than the GT-R Nismo, rated at 2.5 seconds. While it doesn’t lack the power, getting that extra tenth-second is tricky and depends on many factors.

The Nissan GT-R50 by Italdesign is the rarest GT-R yet

With only 50 units scheduled to be built, the GT-R50 is the rarest street-legal iteration of the GT-R and a future collectible. The company says that only a limited number of reservations are still available, so the GT-R50 will become sold out soon.

The Nissan GT-R50 is a million-dollar car

While the GT-R is a relatively affordable sports car, the GT-R50 is immensely expensive. Pricing starts from €990,000, which converts to almost $1.1 million. That’s about five times more expensive the GT-R Nismo and almost 10 times more expensive than the base Nissan GT-R.

It’s also the kind of sticker that could get you a McLaren Senna supercar (priced around $920,000) or a pair of heavily customized sports cars like the Ferrari F8 Tributo and Lamborghini Huracan Evo.
