The most awaited event of the entire 50th anniversary of BMW M is the debut of the new G87 M2. The M2 was first introduced in 2015 after scrapping further plans for the 1 Series M Coupe, and since then, it has been the go-to compact sports car for enthusiasts, capable on both the racetrack and the road. However, after months of teasing, BMW will finally launch the new G87 M2 on the 12th of October.

A Beefed-Up M240i From the Outside

If you are familiar with the M lite version of the 2 Series coupe, the M240i, you will be able to picture the overall looks of the upcoming M2. Thank goodness the odd-looking kidney grilles from its elder brothers, the M3 and M4, won’t be a part of the upcoming M2. Instead, the lower grilles will be much broader. However, the headlight modules look identical to the M240i, but BMW could change the graphics to make it look more focused. A lot of information about the M2 was previously released by a BMW official in June 2022. He claimed that the M2 would have the same brakes, wheels, and platform as the M3, among other things. However, the official has also disclosed that the G87 M2 would have slightly bigger dimensions than the current M240i. Nevertheless, this upcoming full-fat entry-level M car will offer killer looks.

First M car to have the latest iDrive 8 system

During the Salzburgring track sessions of the M2, it was leaked that the upcoming M2 will benefit from the latest BMW infotainment tech called iDrive 8. The system was first brought to light by the all-electric iX luxury SUV. So there will be a huge-curved panel that will pack two horizontally-placed displays. One is a larger 14.9-inch touchscreen unit, and the other is a 12.3-inch driver information display. On the other hand, the seats will be the standard M Sport seats found in the M3, and you will have the option to choose a set of M carbon seats that will help reduce weights and offer better bolstering. Furthermore, the cabin of the upcoming M2 will feature a new M steering wheel and a reorganized center console with many new buttons compared to the outgoing model.

Even More Impressive Power

It is obvious that a new generation car packs slightly more power than it used to before. However, the S58 engine found under the hood of the M3 will also be found in the M2 this time around. To give you an overview, the previous M2 could crank out 405 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque through the rear wheels. While BMW has confirmed that the rear-wheel-drive configuration will be the only option at launch, the power figures might cross the 450 horsepower threshold. That would make it about 20 horsepower less powerful than the standard M3. Also, there won’t be any Competition model this time, at least at the time of debut, but a report from Bimmerpost suggests that the M2 xDrive will be available in the future. However, like the other M coupes, you will be offered to choose between a six-speed manual and a seven-speed DCT.
