Honda just dropped the first official details on the new Civic Type R, and as expected it comes with a lot of good news. It features an amazing exterior look and, although we don't have the official specifications just yet, it comes with the promise of being the "most powerful Civic Type R ever." The Type R's main flaw is that it is only offered as a four-door sedan, and we would love to see how it would look like a coupe. Luckily Marouane Bembli, aka The Sketch Monkey, reimagined the new Type R into a sports coupe with a rear-wheel-drive configuration.

A RWD Honda Civic Type R?

Marouane kept most of the design elements of the Type R, like the long hood and the short deck, but did a few changes to transform it into a proper coupe. It started with removing the rear doors and moving the A-pillar back. The rear end was also lowered and the entire rear end, including the taillights, are slimmer. The little wing that sticks out from the rear window was also removed, and the wheels are also new. What he kept was the trunk lid, so this coupe Type R is a traditional coupe without a hatch. He also kept that cool-looking Championship White exterior finish that made a return to the Type R color palette for the new generation.

The result is no doubt a great coupe, but how powerful will it be? Well, the engine of the new Type R is still a mystery. The only thing Honda said is that it will be "most powerful Civic Type R ever." With this in mind, we can only guess the next Type R should deliver around 325 - 330 horsepower. Just as a reminder, the old Type R was powered by a 2.0-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder engine that delivered 306 horses at 6,500 rpm and 295 pound-feet of torque between 2,500 and 4,500 rpm. In Europe and in Japan it was a little bit more powerful and delivered 316 ponies. No matter the engine tune, the new Type R will be offered with a six-speed manual transmission.

And while there might still be a lot he could have improved, Marouane said he is very happy with the final design. We must admit we like it a lot too and who knows, maybe Honda will get inspired and will finally offer a Type R coupe version too. Fingers crossed!
