Most of you will probably agree that “they don’t make them like they used to” when it comes to cars. Granted, the performance of modern cars is much more accessible compared to, let’s say, something from the 1980s, but there’s a reason most poster cars are from a few decades ago. One such car is the rally-dominating Lancia Delta and although there have been modern recreations like the Delta Futurista, it hasn’t had a proper successor…until now.

Luca Napolitano – Lancia’s new CEO – recently gave an interview confirming that, after what, for us, felt like a very long time, the Lancia Delta is finally getting a much-deserved resurrection. "Everyone wants the Delta and it cannot be missing from our plans. It will return and it will be a true Delta: an exciting car, a manifesto of progress and technology. And of course, it will be electric." This last part has us a bit worried, since most of the hardcore Delta fans would want what they call a “proper successor” and not some “buzzing toaster on wheels”.

Details at this point are very limited and many things will change by 2026. Although Lancia CEO, Luca Napolitano said it will “of course, be electric”, the final decision is yet to be made. At the moment, we don’t even know what body type the new Lancia Delta will be. Hopefully, Stellantis management will have more common sense and not turn the Delta into a hideous crossover, like what Mitsubishi did with the Eclipse.

That said, it wouldn’t be a surprise if the new Delta ends up being an EV since manufacturers are slowly bringing back old models as EVs. Take a look at what Alpine is doing with the upcoming Alpine A110 and the Renault 5’s retro-inspired successor, both of which are going to be EVs. Whatever the result, it is definitely going to be a step up from the mildly-mannered reboot of the Delta, made between 2008 and 2014 and it will most definitely be better than that hideous turd called the Ypsilon.
