Revived in 2014 with the limited-edition Taraf sedan, Lagonda just announced plans to build its first-ever SUV. The luxury firm owned by Aston Martin will introduce the crossover, which will feature an emission-free drivetrain, in 2021. While the name has yet to be confirmed, it could be called the Varekai, based on a trademark that Aston Martin filed earlier in 2018. According to Lagonda, the SUV will be based on the design language of the radical Vision Concept showcased at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show.

The British company also said that the SUV will be built "around near-future technologies, such as its advanced Battery Electric drivetrain." That's not a lot of info, but the Varekai could be the first all-electric SUV on the luxury market. Assuming that Rolls-Royce and Bentley don't come up with their own EVs by 2021. Lagonda also promises that the SUV will be "ultra-stylish" and "supremely luxurious," so it's safe to assume that it will compete against the Bentley Bentayga and the Rolls-Royce Cullinan. If the electric drivetrain is powerful enough, it could also be a threat to the Lamborghini Urus.

"The Lagonda SUV will retain the boldness of the Vision Concept," said Aston Martin EVP and Chief Creative Officer, Marek Reichman. "Lagonda is a luxury brand, but it is also one rooted in technology. It will be like no other SUV to drive, so its looks have to reflect that new reality and to serve as a pathfinder to a future in which the most desirable and prestigious automobiles still have a place."

Those are mighty big words, but 2021 is three full years away, and anything can happen. Hopefully, Aston Martin will release more information by then.
