The Mercedes-AMG G4×4² has been anticipated for a very long time now. The Mercedes-Benz G4×4² came out many years back, but this has been due. For the uninitiated, it is an off-road-oriented version of the legendary G-wagon. In short, it lies somewhere between the standard G-wagon and the 6x6 model. It has been spotted many times in the past, but the beast has been spied in its 2022 avatar with minimum skin.

Updated 02/24/2022; A new Mercedes-AMG G4×4² prototype was sent out for testing around the the Arctic Circle. Unlike the previous prototypes, the new one wears a cool red paint and has the grille very well camouflaged, meaning that it is indeed wearing the updated grille we heard so many rumors about.

Our spy photographers spotted two prototypes, one that’s reappeared for winter testing in Scandinavia, and the other testing near its birthplace in Affalterbach, Germany. Both the models feature different wheel designs in different sizes.

When compared to the standard model, the new AMG 4x4² sits a lot higher, courtesy of portal axles and a long-travel suspension setup. The older models – the G500 and G550 – were powered by the 4.0-liter, bi-turbo V-8 engine that put out 416 horses and 450 pound-feet of torque. The 2022 AMG model could come with the engine, but higher power outputs. We’re being a little too optimistic, but don’t rule out the chances of the G63’s engine and power outputs here – 577 horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque.

The 4×4² will be carried over to the EVs as well, as depicted by this EQC concept that Mercedes showcased in 2020. That was more of an announcement that the 4×4² will be offered in EVs, as well, but expect similar philosophy on the EQG.

There’s still no word on when it will come out. Until then, check out the gallery below and let us know what you think of the new Mercedes-AMG G4×4².
