The Lexus RZ Is A Near-Production-Ready Luxurious Alternative To The Toyota bZ4X

Among the 16 EVs previewed by Toyota and Lexus, this one is nearly ready for production

Toyota and Lexus recently unveiled 16 upcoming electric vehicles (EVs), and this includes the RZ. As a reminder, the Lexus RZ is not the company’s first EV. That would be the UX 300e, but this will be the first Lexus model to ride on a dedicated EV platform,

The Lexus RZ is nearly ready for production. In fact, during the press conference, Toyota unveiled a video (24:52) of the RZ being driven by Toyota Motor Corporation President Akio Toyoda around a test track, showcasing the handling and performance capabilities of Lexus’ first dedicated EV. It uses the same underpinnings as the Toyota bZ4X, which in turn, is also used by the Subaru Solterra.

Apart from these photos of the pre-production Lexus RZ, no other details have been revealed. Compared to the Toyota bZ4X, the Lexus RZ is perhaps the better looking of the two. It doesn’t have the weird body cladding of the bZ4X (and the Solterra), and it also comes with a few nifty sporty design cues.

Compared to the Toyota bZ4X, the Lexus RZ 450e is perhaps the better looking of the two, as it features less body cladding and a much sportier design

The signature Lexus spindle grille in the RZ is, unsurprisingly, closed off. The only functional vents at the front end are the ones at the bottom of the grille and the vertical opening on each side. Above those vertical vents are sharp LED headlights with the signature daytime running light design of Lexus. The hood also has some creases that give the RZ a rather pointy nose.

The side profile of the Lexus RZ shares a lot of similarities with existing Lexus crossover SUVs, especially the RX. The roof slopes down towards the blacked-out C-pillar, giving it a floating roof effect. No dimensions were revealed yet, but it’s safe to say that the RZ will be similar in size to the bZ4X.

No powertrain details or interior photos have been provided yet, but we expect the RZ to be more powerful than the Toyota bZ4X

Powertrain and interior details for the Lexus RZ are also still unknown at this point. Of course, being a Lexus, we would expect the RZ to have a better-looking and more luxurious interior. Its powertrain should in theory, also be more powerful.

For reference, the Toyota bZ4X that the RZ shares its platform with has either a single- or dual-motor setup. The single motor version, which is good for a zero to 62 mph time of 8.4 seconds, drives the front wheels and it produces 201 horsepower and 196 pound-feet. On the other hand, the dual-motor version produces 215 horsepower and 248 pound-feet, driving all four wheels. It has a zero to 62 mph time of 7.7 seconds.

That’s all the information that we have for now on the Lexus RZ. We expect the Lexus RX to make its producti0on debut sometime in 2022.
