It was only earlier this year that we reported how Lucid’s Air sedan might offer a range well above the 500-mile bracket, becoming the first EV to break that barrier. Now, another report discusses how the yet-to-be-launched Lucid Air will offer super-fast charging capabilities.

How does 300 miles of range with just 20 minutes of charging sound to you?

According to InsideEVs, the Lucid Air’s battery “can recharge at a rate of roughly 20 miles of range per minute of charging.” That’s possible thanks to the 900-volt electric architecture that underpins the sleek sedan, which smartly mixes together a suite of elements, including:

-* custom lithium-ion battery cells

-* a ‘sophisticated’ battery

-* and a clever thermal management system

What else we know about the 2021 Lucid Air?

Well, let’s start with range. Couple that with the super-fast charging ability we just told you about and you’ve got potentially the first EV to throw range anxiety under the bus.

There’s a drawback, though, but it should only be temporary. The Air can accept more than 300 kilowatts of power - for comparison, the Porsche Taycan only accepts up to 270 kilowatts of power - but there aren’t many charging stations able to deliver that in the U.S., except the Electrify America network. In fact, Lucid has partnered up with EA to offer its customers free unlimited charging over a three-year period.

Also on the powertrain front, Car and Driver expects the Air to offer single and dual motors, depending on the trim level. The dual-motor setup will also work as an all-wheel-drive system. Lucid is tight lip about performance, but the highest iteration of the Air could deliver as much as 1000 horsepower.

What we know for sure courtesy of Lucid’s official channels of communication is the Air’s 0-60 mph sprint time: 2.5 seconds. At the same time, top speed is rated at more than 200 mph, which is not bad for an EV. Battery-wise, two packs will be on offer - 100 kWh and 130 kWh.
