Maserati launched the MC20 in 2020, and it has now followed it up with a drop-top version of the supercar. Called the MC20 Cielo, this convertible supercar looks absolutely gorgeous. The biggest difference between the MC20 and the MC20 Cielo is obviously the roof. The Italian automaker has equipped a retractable glass roof on the Cielo, and it has added just 143 pounds to the MC20's weight. What’s also cool is that Maserati has retained the butterfly doors, something which is a rarity when a car loses its top. Is the MC20 Cielo one of the hottest Spyder models in recent times?

A Glass Retractable Roof Was A Surprise

What’s better than an MC20? Well, an MC20 without a roof. If the MC20 had a minimalistic, understated approach, the Cielo capitalizes on that and becomes an absolutely drool-worthy model. It is, perhaps, the best haircut we have seen in a long time. The MC20 Cielo (stands for Maserati Corse 2020 ‘Sky’) features a very unique retractable roof.

It is an electrochromic smart glass window that can be transformed from clear to opaque at the touch of a button on the infotainment screen. This is courtesy of Polymer-Dispersed Liquid Crystal (PDLC) technology. The automaker also noted that the roof offers best-in-class thermal insulation.

The glass roof weighs 143.3 pounds (65 kilos) As for the operation time, the MC20 Cielo’s roof takes 12 seconds to open or close and can be operated at up to 31 mph of speed. The carbon-fiber tub is retained and so are the butterfly doors. This comes as a surprise as funky door setups on cars are usually boiled down to simple doors when they lose their roofs, primarily due to their structure and stability. Here, however, they rotate upwards, thus allowing the spyder to retain the doors.

The MC20 will be available in an Acquamarina exterior shade as part of the launch edition. It is a new three-layer metallic color that is available as part of the Maserati Fuoriserie customization program. The other new shade is the Grigio Incognito, which is a pastel grey color.

The spyder also benefits from a wide range of Active Safety Systems. It comes with autonomous emergency braking, traffic sign information, and a new 360-degree camera. These features will be joined by the parking sensors, rear-view camera, and blind-spot monitoring that were included in the 2022 model rejig of the MC20.

Coming to the drivetrain, the MC20 Cielo is powered by the same 3.0-liter, twin-turbo V-6 Nettuno engine as the MC20 and even churns out the same amount of power – 621 horsepower and 538 pound-feet of torque. Maserati noted that it can sprint to 60 mph from a standstill in three seconds and will have a top speed of 200 mph. It isn’t better than the standard MC20 but isn’t any worse either. It is almost just as quick and fast as the coupe, which takes 2.9 seconds to 60 mph from rest and has a top speed of 202 mph according to the company.

Conclusion

The MC20 Cielo is expected to be $30,000 more than the coupe, which seems worth it. The MC20 and the MC20 Cielo will be joined with the electric version in the future, and it will most likely feature the ‘Folgore’ tag, which will be the suffix used for EV models.
