Seven years old as of 2020, the third-generation Acura MDX is on its way out. A much-improved fourth-gen model is underway for an October 14 unveiling, but the SUV we're going to see later this week is a prototype of the upcoming production model.

Acura just unveiled images and details of the new MDX's interior and it all looks very promising. Not only a step up in terms of premium features, it also comes with brand-new technology and upgraded connectivity. The digital displays are also much bigger than before. Let's have a closer look below.

The new Acura MDX interior is plain gorgeous

Granted, the cabin looks fancier than it really is with all that lighting, but it's pretty obvious that it will look nice in natural light too. The cabin looks a lot more luxurious than before. The design and craftsmanship are superb, with every layer of the dashboard and the wraparound leather surfaces of the center console speaking volumes of how much effort Acura has put into the fourth-gen SUV.

There's leather and high-quality stitching on the upper area, while the center is a big piece of piano black trim. Acura mentions new open-pore wood trim, so you can probably get it as an option for various surfaces. There's also French stitching and leather-wrapped lower areas that "embrace" the center stack and center console.

The new MDX will be equipped with new sports seats with sculpted sides and curvilinear quilting for all three rows. They're also fitted with high-contrast stitching and piping in a variety of colors. The front seats feature multi-mode massage functions, but Acura doesn't say if it comes standard on base models too. Probably not.

Tech-wise, the fourth-generation MDX will debut the company's new Precision Cockpit, which combines a large, all-digital instrument cluster and an ultra-wide infotainment screen placed atop the dashboard. There's no word on features and capability, but it should include Acura's latest tech plus a few new features.

Acura also mentions a new, premium audio system with 25 speakers and integrated LED ambient lighting, but it's probably optional for most trims and standard only on the most expensive model.

We will find out more about the upcoming 2021 Acura MDX on October 14, so stay tuned for a review of the prototype model.
