It’s not yet official, but the AMG GT Black Series might be quickest production car on the ’Ring

The Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series, the most extreme variant of the German sports car, might have set a new lap record on the Nurburgring Nordschleife. The benchmark is not yet official though, but just an estimate by youtuber Misha Charoudin. The man who "lives at the world-famous Nurburgring" spotted the AMG GT Black Series lapping the German track and claims, based on calculations which he explains in a video, that the coupe needed only 6:43 minutes to complete the Nordschleife loop. If this is true, the AMG GT Black Series is the quickest production and street-legal car on the ’Ring.

Misha has been watching cars lap the Nurburgring for quite a while and he seems to be pretty good at estimating lap times. He did it for other cars and he published a full video explaining how he calculates the runs. So this estimate for the AMG GT Black Series might be very accurate. At 6:43 minutes, the German coupe will surpass the current benchmark by almost two seconds. As of October 22, 2020, the quickest ’Ring lap time belongs to the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ and was set back in July 2018 at 6:44.97 minutes. An impressive feat of the AMG GT Black Series, if these calculations are true.

The Black Series run is also a massive improvement over previous laps with different versions of the AMG GT.

Back in 2016, Mercedes lapped the ’Ring in 7:10.92 with AMG GT R. The Germans returned in 2019 with the AMG GT R Pro and shaved four seconds off the benchmark, running a 7:06.60-minute lap. At 6:43 minutes, the AMG GT Black Series would be 23 seconds quicker than the AMG GT R Pro.

But why hasn’t Mercedes-Benz announced the benchmark yet? Well, the Black Series was spotted running behind a camera car on some sections of the track, so the Germans are probably working on a video of the run. It should come out in a few days, so the AMG GT Black Series will claim its crown soon.

As a reminder, the AMG GT Black Series is a track-ready version of the company’s front-engined two-door. It’s fitted with GT3-spec aero features on the outside, while the 4.0-liter V-8 engine was beefed-up to deliver 720 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque. The coupe needs 3.2 seconds to hit 62 mph from a standing start and tops out at 202 mph.
