When Mercedes-AMG first revealed plans to develop its own hybrid hypercar, it promised power figures in the vicinity of 1,000 horsepower, making it more powerful than the Porsche 918 Spyder, Ferrari LaFerrari, and McLaren P1. It also puts it in a race with the Aston Martin Valkyrie for the title of “most powerful hybrid hypercar” title in its segment. Well, a report from Automobile Magazine has shed light on the Project One hypercar’s total output, and it seems Mercedes-AMG has lived up to its word. The hypercar will have a combined output of 1,020 horsepower!

Breaking that total down puts the output of the all-wheel drive beast’s 1.6-liter turbocharged V-6 engine at 748 horsepower. That number is then complemented by four electric motors, two of which will drive the front wheels and the other two powering the turbocharger and the crankshaft. Altogether, these four electric motors are expected to produce a total of 408 horsepower, and when you do the math, the end total goes up to 1,020 horsepower when overlap is accounted for. On top of its power figures, the Automobile report indicates that the car will weigh less than 2,900 pounds with the capacity to run exclusively on electric power for distances of up to 30 miles.

There’s power in bragging rights

In a segment where power is at a premium above a lot of things, Mercedes-AMG’s Project One hypercar could have exactly that depending on how much power Aston Martin and Red Bull can get out of the Valkyrie hypercar. The Project One’s numbers have the potential to become even more impressive if the performance numbers translate to the amount of power it has at its disposal. Its engine’s ability to rev to as high as 11,000 rpm also says a lot about what the car is capable of, so much so that the automaker also said that for every 31,000 miles covered by the Project One hypercar, that same F1-derived turbocharged V-6 engine is going to need a lot of work to round it up back to shape.

At this point, a lot of things are in play when it comes to the Project One. It’s shaping up to be as good as Mercedes-AMG has hyped it up to be and if it lives up to all of these expectations, it could be turn into a car that’s every bit as worth as its $2.4 million price tag.

More importantly, the Project One could set the bar for all future hybrid hypercars to come. Take notes, BMW and Audi. You want to build your own hypercars? Well, Mercedes-AMG is looking more and more like the automaker to beat.
