• The Most Powerful BMW M Engine Wasn’t Found In a BMW - Until Now, That Is

BMW just took the gloves off. The M5 CS boasts the most powerful street engine BMW has ever made

Throughout its existence, BMW has made some pretty epic engines (and some not so epic), but their most powerful engine wasn’t actually put in a BMW car. It was the McLaren F1 that received BMW’s S70/2 6.1-liter V-12 back in the day, and for a long time, that was the brand’s most powerful engine. Until now, that is. Things have changed and we have the BMW M5 CS to thank for that.

The hardcore version of the super sedan comes with the familiar 4.4-liter, twin-turbo, V-8, but power output is now 627 horsepower – 10 more than before. Torque remains the same at 553 pound-feet (750 Nm). The bump in power may be small, but the M5 CS boasts a faster, 2.9-second time to 60 mph (97 km/h). The 0 to 124 mph (200 km/h) happens in 10.4 seconds and the top speed is electronically limited to 190 mph (305 km/h).

The BMW M5 CS will be lighter than the “normal” M5. US-spec cars boast a weight loss of 230 pounds (104 kg), while European cars are 70 pounds (32 kg) lighter.

The M5 CS will be a limited production version of the super sedan and will be made as a 2022 model only.

At this point, there is no word on how many M5 CS will be made, nor how many will be allocated to each market. US cars are expected to go on sale in the second half of 2022. MSRP is $142,000 plus $995 destination.

Born in 1992, I come from a family of motoring enthusiasts. My passion for cars was awoken at the age of six, when I saw a Lamborghini Diablo SV in a magazine. After high school I earned a master’s degree in marketing and a Master of Arts in Media and Communications. Over the years, I’ve practiced and become skilled in precision driving and to date have test driven more than 250 cars across the globe. Over the years, I’ve picked up basic mechanical knowledge and have even taken part in the restoration of a 1964 Jaguar E-Type and an Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint. Lately, I’ve taken a fancy to automotive photography, and while modern cars are my primary passion, I also have a love for Asian Martial Arts, swimming, war history, craft beer, historical weapons, and car restoration. In time, I plan my own classic car restoration and hope to earn my racing certificate, after which I expect to establish my own racing team.  Read full bio
