This could be the Alfa that we’ve all been waiting for

Alfa Romeo’s plan to bring the back the 8C nameplate has come with a lot of speculation about its presentation. The prevalent buzz surrounding the model is that it’s going to be a supercar of some sort. As it turns out, though, it could be more than just a supercar. The new Alfa Romeo 8C could be an 800-horsepower hybrid monster, debunking previous rumors that said that it would “only” have 700 horsepower on tap.

The 8C’s hybrid supercar status is going to rival the best that Ferrari has to offer.

The latest bit of information comes to us by way of Car Magazine. The publication is reporting that the 8C’s hybrid supercar status is going to rival the best that Ferrari has to offer. While that may seem like a stretch on the surface, it would also be a mistake to dismiss anything that’s coming out of Alfa Romeo these days. The late Sergio Marchionne confirmed that the 8C would return in a vastly different form compared to when we last saw it, but he didn’t dive into the details of it.

From what we know, the new 8C will feature a mid-engine layout that’s similar to a lot of today’s supercars, Ferraris included. The model will also use a carbon fiber monocoque chassis and, just as important, will carry a 2.9-liter, twin-turbo, V-6 - exactly the same engine that’s found in the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio.

Here’s where it gets interesting, though.

Combine these two sources of power, and you’re looking at an Alfa Romeo that could have a ridiculous 800 horsepower to play around with

According to Car Magazine, Alfa Romeo will tune the twin-turbo V-6 to develop an astounding 600 horsepower. That figure is impressive enough by itself, but the Italian automaker isn’t stopping there. It also plans to supplement the internal combustion engine with an electric motor that has 200 horsepower of its own. Combine these two sources of power, and you’re looking at an Alfa Romeo that could have a ridiculous 800 horsepower to play around with. By comparison, an 800-horsepower Alfa would be almost 100 horsepower more powerful than the Ferrari 488 Pista. If the 8C does get that much power to play around with, expect the model to have supercar-like performance numbers, including an acceleration time from 0 to 62 mph of under three seconds. Top speed could reach the sky, too, though to be conservative, let’s say that it can do 210 mph without even breaking a sweat.

While all of this is still subject to confirmation from Alfa’s part, it’s more than likely that the 8C is going to be the kind of exotic car we normally associate with its Italian counterpart. That’s the kind of buzz it’s been generating ever since Sergio Marchionne confirmed its arrival last year. There’s no price for the car yet, but it’s thought that Alfa plans to build less than 1,000 units of the 8C.
