• The new SX Package Makes the Toyota Tundra A Little Darker for 2023

SR5 Models of the Toyota Tundra can now be equipped with a dark appearance package

After a much anticipated revamp for 2022, the Tundra receives minor updates for the 2023 model year in the form of a new SX trim package. It is solely for the SR5 trim and adds dark-colored accents to both the exterior and the interior. Both the base and the hybrid version of the 3.5-liter twin-turbo V-6 remain unchanged for this year, with the same power figures as the 2022 model year.

We were expecting a hard-core Raptor-killing off-road trim for the Tundra. Instead, Toyota decided to launch the SX Package, which is similar to the Nightshade package offered for the Camry, 4Runner, and the Sequoia. This package is available only on the SR5, be it a 4×2 or 4×4 set-up. Only the Double Cab models with a 6.5-foot bed size and the CrewMax models with a 5.5-foot bed will be offered with the package. The SX Package unfolds 18-inch Dark Gray Metallic wheels, black-colored door handles, and a rear inboard bumper. On the inside, the black-colored theme continues and replaces smoked silver accents. The package will unlock blacked-out seats and dashboard, but with a gray contrasting headliner and pillars. Colors such as White, Celestial Silver Metallic, Magnetic Gray Metallic, and Midnight Black Metallic will be available with the SX Package.

The new Toyota Tundra came with the choice of two twin-turbo V-6 engines - the i-FORCE and the i-FORCE MAX. The former is a gas-only 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V-6 engine with 389 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque. The outgoing 2022 model year SR models are powered by the same engine, but were slightly less powerful at 348 horsepower and 405 pound-feet of torque. This engine is available for the first five trims, including the SR, the SR5, the Limited, the Platinum, and the 1794 Edition.

Next is the i-FORCE MAX, which is the 3.5-liter twin-turbo V-6, but it is assisted by an electric motor that sits between the engine and transmission. The mild-hybrid setup draws out more power; 437 horsepower and 583 pound-feet of torque. But it is more efficient than its gas-only competitors, like the F-150. Both powertrains can be specced with either rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, but the transmission is the same 10-speed automatic with sequential shift mode and TOW/HAUL mode. This mild-hybrid powertrain is only available in the Limited, Platinum, and the 1794 Edition, while being standard on the TRD Pro and the Capstone.
