Turn the lights, turn the lights down low

Nissan revealed a highly modified version of its Navara pickup truck at the Hannover Motor Show, called the Navara Dark Sky Concept. The pickup is designed to transport astronomers to remote locations to observe the night sky; but of course, it will also appeal to the romantics and star-gazers.

An Interesting Concept

This pickup has a trailer attached to it that contains lots of astronomical equipment, including a state-of-the-art Planewave telescope.

The trailer comes with a battery pack of its own to take care of electrical needs, like wi-fi, laptops, and other equipment without having to use the pickup’s battery. It’s also got a mechanised roof and television signal transmitter, if broadcasting is required. On the inside, the truck’s interior lighting has been replaced with red lighting, as red affects the night vision of humans the least. Nissan has added reflective trim on important parts of the interior to aid access in low light without you having to fiddle around for a torch.

Along with features like enhanced blind spot warning and around view monitors, Nissan’s semi-autonomous Propilot also finds its way in here.

This is more of a necessity than an add-on feature because of the additional length of the specifically made trailer. A system called Intelligent Towing Hitch Alignment is present here that automatically aligns the truck with the trailer before hook-up.

A Little More Power Could’ve Been Added

The unit found under the hood is the same one as in the standard Navara truck; a 2.3-liter diesel engine that produces 187 horses and 332 pound-feet of torque.

The Dark Sky Concept is raised 140 mm more than the standard model, allowing better off-road ability. 20-inch tires are found on the truck to go with 16-inchers on the trailer.

We talk about hypercars being a niche market; but what about this? For starters, an automaker has targeted a particular profession – a profession that’s niche in itself! Will Nissan be able to generate sales from this vehicle, if it even makes it to production at all? We’ll have to wait and watch. Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
