Polestar has finally put a figure on the Polestar 1. Volvo’s new performance sub-brand has listed the Polestar 1 with a price tag of $155,000 in the U.S. The car will also sell for €155,000 in Europe. Those who are interested in the car will have to deposit $2,500 or €2,500 to secure a spot on the company’s reservation list. Pre-orders are now open for the Polestar in 18 different countries, including a number of European nations, China, and North America.

This is about the price we expected for the Polestar 1. Past reports mentioned that the car would cost between €130,000 to €150,000, so the confirmed price is right in that neighborhood. The announcement also confirms that Polestar isn’t afraid to ask a premium for the car, at least relative to the price of other cars in its segment.

The all-electric Tesla Model S P100D, for example, starts at $135,000. That’s $20,000 less than the Polestar 1. Another potential competitor, the Porsche Panamera 4 E-Hybrid, is a lot cheaper, thanks to a starting price of $99,600.

Despite the higher price tag, demand remains healthy for the Polestar 1. According to the company, more than 7,000 people have already placed deposits for the car, an incredible number considering that Polestar’s initial plan was to develop 1,500 units of the performance sedan, spread out at 500 units per year over three years. The company has known for a while that demand has exceeded its own supply plans so it’ll be interesting how it addresses it in the future. Polestar COO Jon Goodman did say that supply of the car could easily be doubled if the situation presented itself.

In addition to buying the car directly, Polestar also has plans to offer a subscription program. It’s unclear how many of the deposits are tied into the company’s subscription plan, but those who opt for this payment plan will have to pay monthly fees for the Polestar 1 to cover amortization payments, insurance costs, and maintenance.

The Polestar 1 has impressed a lot of people since it made its debut last year. It’s been lauded for having a clean and sleek design, a premium interior, and a sophisticated plug-in hybrid setup that features a turbocharged and supercharged 2.0-liter engine, a 34-kWh battery pack, and a pair of electric motors that combine to produce 600 horsepower and 737 pound-feet of torque.

Whatever you may think of the Polestar 1 and its price, it’s clear that a lot of people are looking forward to seeing what it has to offer. They'll even pay for a chance to find out.
