Car enthusiasts likely remember the movie “Gone in 60 Seconds”. While the original movie was from the 1970s, the remake from 2000 featured some impressive vehicles, more familiar to the younger audience. Among them was a Porsche 911 "996" Carrera, which was actually, the first car “boosted” in the movie. Now, that very car is for sale, but there’s more to this “996” that meets the eye, as it pretends to be a much newer car than it actually is.

You may have noticed that "996" was put in quotes. While there was, indeed, a Porsche 996 Carrera in the movie, the stunt car that smashed through the showroom glass was, actually, a 1978 Porsche 911 made to look like the, then brand new, 996. That very car is now listed for sale on ClassicCars.com, by a private seller in Jackson, Mississippi. Like the rest of the movie cars, listed on the blackboard, the fake 996 had a nickname – Tina.

While Tina’s screen time was limited, the producers did not want to risk smashing a brand new Porsche 996 Carrera, since a new one cost around $66,000 back in 2000 (approx. $112,000 in 2022 money). Instead, they took a 1978 Porsche 930, which at the time was not that expensive, and commissioned a custom, 996 body to be made.

The entire original 930 body was stripped, including the roof. The composite fiberglass 996 body was crafted by using original NOS Porsche parts made in Germany. The fit and finish leave something to be desired although this may have been due to the stunts performed with the car. It’s also worth noting that the 996 body has the original proportions, resulting in the rear tires being lost in the wheel arches.

As it was a stunt car, the Porsche 930's interior has been fairly stripped, leaving only the dashboard and front seats. Naturally, the engine is an air-cooled flat-six, although the listing doesn’t mention which version of the Porsche 930 it is. Still, power goes to the rear wheels through a four or a five-speed manual transmission (also not specified).

The car is accompanied by various memorabilia, including a 7'x9' Gone in 60 Seconds Tina wall banner, movie theater ''lobby cards”, a media press kit with cast, producers, and photos, and an autograph by film producer, Ms. Denice Halicki, and more. The asking price is $65,900, which ironically, is exactly what a 1999 Porsche 911 Carrera cost back in the day. Considering a real 1999 Porsche 911 Carrera can still be found for well under $30,000 on the used market, the investment is hardly justified. Still, if you want a piece of cinema history and are tired of seeing replicas of Eleanor, this one might be right up your alley.
