If you, like me, are fascinated by the Porsche 911, you’ve probably heard the motto “evolution, not revolution”. It’s the philosophy by which the 911 is based on since its inception back in the 1960s. And, although the rear-engine sports car is still faithful to its roots (as much as possible), the YouTube channel “TheSketchMonkey” points out 911’s gradual deviation from its traditional design to a more generic one, especially with regards to its rear end. In order to explain, the YouTuber shows us what the 992 GT3 Touring may look like if Porsche went with its original 911 design.
Making A New 911 Look Classic
Our new favorite digital artist makes a point that it’s truly remarkable how Porsche has managed to create and refine a timeless design. However, as “TheSketchMonkey” also points out, the first three generations were strikingly similar. It’s no surprise, given that they all share the same platform.
Regardless, the digital designer also focuses our attention on how the 911’s taillights have gradually moved higher up.
He reckons that if Porsche was to put an integrated ducktail, like on some older models, the rear could look like something Aton Martin currently makes.
Moreover, he wants to bring back the distinctive sloping line that drops towards the rear of older 911s – something the 993 started “ironing out” and was completely disposed of in the 991.
“TheSketchMonkey” does something very simple. He simply moves the taillights to where the license plate is and gives it the more classic look that we last saw on the 964 generation. This being a sportier version of the 911, the designer did not bring back the classic sloping line on the side, so as to not ruin the more pronounced rear hips of the GT3 Touring. We also see a blacked-out chrome trim, which in his opinion, is a bit out of place on a more performance-oriented version.
Sadly, a lot of “safety regulations” exist that tell designers where the taillights should be, how big the mirrors should be in relation to the windows, or how high the headlights need to be mounted. Because of this, we might not see the return of a more traditional rear end design for the 911, but if Porsche somehow manages to bring it back, many 911 fans would surely rejoice. And if not, there are plenty of companies out there that would gladly alter the looks of your 911.
