Renault recently revealed the 5 Prototype – the car that will eventually revive the Renault 5 name. Before that, however, Renault revealed the Megane eVision concept, which not only served as a visual representation of the company’s future plans but as a basis for the new prototype that you see here: The Renault Megane E-Tech or Renault MeagneE for short. It’s not a production model just yet, but one of 30 prototypes that Renault is putting into the testing phase as it prepares for (hopefully) a 2022 launch.

Renault Megane E-Tech – Renaults C-Segment Electric Contender

The prototype of the MeganeE is one of 30 that is going to be hitting the road in Europe immediately as Renault gears up to launch its new electric C-segment contender. We don’t know a whole lot about it quite yet, but Renault has given us a little bit of information to go by. For starters, it’s riding on the company’s modular CMF-EV platform, which replaced the platform found in the Nissan Leaf and debuted with the new 2021 Nissan Ariya back in late 2020.}

The more derives its power from a small-for-today 60-kWh battery, with Renault promising upward of 450 km or about 280 miles based on the Euro WLTP cycle. Given the power output and the weight the 60 kWh battery adds to the equation, don’t expect the MeganeE to be all that fast. Car & Driver managed to get to 60 mph in 7.4 seconds with a 147-horsepower Nissan Leaf with a 40-kWh battery pack, so somewhere in the high six-second range is probably what you can expect.

What’s more important is what will come further down the road. With the Megane going electric, it will open the door for an electric Megane RS. Of course, this hasn’t been confirmed, but it wouldn’t be difficult for Renault to integrate more power and sportier handling without affecting range too much. It could even end up being the fastest Megane ever produced. With Renault commencing testing on the new Megane E-Tech this summer, the production model should hit showrooms by summer of 2022, while hotter versions of the new Megane EV will come a year or two later.
