Today, tuning a car requires either having a lot of know-how and technology, or dropping your car off at an aftermarket tuner like Hennessey, ABT Sportsline, or Brabus among many, many others. We’re already to a point where tuning has gone beyond simple bolt-on upgrades or deeper engine work with computer remapping capable of adding, in some cases, 100 horsepower or more depending on the car. In the future, however, going to a tuner will be obsolete, much like going to a store and renting a movie or video game is today. The first car to legitimately prove that, is the all-new Rimac Nevera.
The Rimac Nevera Proves How Much EVs Will Change Everything
The Rimac Nevera, also known as the Rimac C-Two prior to June of 2021, is a mean, all-electric hypercar. Power is derived from a big 120 kWh battery and four electric motors that are good for 1,914 horsepower and 2,360 pound-feet of torque, enough to put the Nevera on par with cars like the Lotus Evija, Pininfarina Battista, and the Aspark Owl. As promised in the past, the Nevera can hit 60 mph in just 1.85 seconds. It can go from naught to 100 mph in just 4.3 seconds, to 186 mph in 9.3 seconds, and it can run a quarter-mile in 8.6 seconds. The Nevara is so fast that Nurburgring worker, Misha Charaoudin, was brought to tears by its sheer performance capabilities. But, what if this performance is, somehow, just not good enough?
One would think that 1,900 horsepower and sub-10-second sprints to 186 mph would be good enough, but we always want more, right? Well, along with the ability to upgrade things like the Nevera’s “Driver Coach” system sometime in 2022, CEO of Rimac – Mate Rimac – as told Carwow’s Mat Watson that performance upgrades, aka more power, is also possible. So, something as simple as an over-the-air update can harness even more power from a 1,900-horsepower electric car. According to Rimac, there’s plenty of room for more power.
He went on to say that throughout the final testing phase, the Nevera has reached about 95-percent of its performance capabilities, but Rimac says that they “can go beyond that and improve it further.” Beyond this, however, that extra power won’t be offered in a more extreme version of the Nevera, but instead on the 150 cars that are planned for production. In the end, the company could push each and every one of them beyond the 2,000-horsepower mark!
How’s that for crazy? Well, there’s some more you can learn from the video that I’ve embedded below, too.
The Nevera is Unique, and Can Do FWD Only, If You Want
According to Mate Rimac, the Nevera can be switched into a FWD-only mode which, essentially, makes it a “very fast Golf.” Whether or not such a more will help increase range remains to be seen, though. Beyond this, Mate Rimac has confirmed that the Nevera is a 100-percent bespoke vehicle with not a single part borrowed or sourced from another automaker. Of the 18 prototypes the company has built, every single one of the car's vents and scoops are functional, and there’s absolutely nothing that was added in just for decoration.
So, in the end, the Rimac Nevera is a bespoke vehicle, and its current performance is something the company can build on in the future. It’s 2021, and we’re living in a time when you can go to bed with 1,914 horsepower and wake up in the morning with more than 2,000 horsepower. If this is possible today, just imagine what we’ll be capable of in 20 or 30 years. Say what you want about EVs taking over, but you can’t deny that there will be at least some benefits.
