The 6.2-liter is set to be reworked to make the CT5-V just a little more powerful than the old CTS-V
by Robert Moore, on LISTEN 02:23There has been a lot of controversy surrounding Cadillac practically sidelining the rather awesome and advanced Blackwing V-8. When we learned that the Blackwing V-8 wouldn’t be found inside the hotter CT5-V Blackwing, we were a little dumbfounded, and now it seems Cadillac is pulling a rather odd play from its book of moves. As it turns out, a new rumor says that the 6.2-liter V-8 is being reworked and will deliver 650 supercharged horsepower in the CT5-V Blackwing.
How Much Power Will the 2021 Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing Have?
To beat out the 640-horsepower CTS-V from yesteryear, a lot of work would have had to be done to make that Blackwing V-8 suitable for the CT5-V Blackwing. So, without the Blackwing V-8 on the table, we expected Cadillac to retune the familiar 6.2-liter V-8 from the CTS-V, and that’s exactly what it’s going to do. Unfortunately, retuning means something different to Cadillac than it does to the rest of us.
A new report coming from Car & Driver says that the engine is being returned and will now deliver 650 horsepower, a meager and not-so-impressive 10-horsepower bump over the CTS-V.
The bump does seem a little weak, but then again, we’re talking about serious horsepower here, so one could argue that a lot of extra grunt really isn’t needed.
The real good news around this is that Cadillac has confirmed that the CT5-V Blackwing will have a manual transmission. It has confirmed that the Blackwing engine won’t be found anywhere near the new CT5-V Blackwing, but it has always stopped short of confirming power output or the presence of the 6.2-liter, so at least some restraint is needed here as this news is largely speculation and rumor at this point.
As for the CT4-V Blackwing, which we once expected to make use of the Blackwing V-8, is now rumored to feature the same 3.6-liter V-6 found under the hood of the ATS-V. It should offer at least the same 464 horsepower found in the ATS-V. We now know that both the CT4-V Blackwing and CT5-V Blackwing won’t debut for at least six months later than expected,, so they probably won’t hit the market until at least some time in the first quarter of 2021.
