Another day, another Hoonigan drag race. The Tesla Model S Plaid keeps giving our favorite, internal combustion engine performance cars a run for their money. This time, Damon from Daily Driven Exotics brought a Lamborghini Aventador SVJ to go up against the Tesla Model S Plaid. Can the flagship V-12 Lambo break the Plaid’s winning streak?

Lamborghini Aventador SVJ

Representing the big, normally aspirated V-12 engines is the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ. The Aventador features a 6.5-liter, normally aspirated V-12, which thanks to a straight-pipe exhaust now develops 780 horsepower and 531 pound-feet (720 Nm) - identical to the Lamborghini Aventador Ultimae. It also sounds like a 1990s F1 car, which is awesome. The Lambo also has an all-wheel-drive system and a seven-speed, single-clutch automatic. It tips the scales at 3,600 pounds (1,633 kg).

Tesla Model S Plaid

Representing the EV segment is the usual suspect – Model S Plaid. It packs three electric motors for a combined output of 1,020 horsepower and 1,050 pound-feet (1,423 Nm). However, a hub-dyno showed that the maximum horsepower of the Plaid is 1,102 horsepower, but those numbers are not consistent due to inefficient battery cooling. Power goes to all four wheels through a single-speed automatic. At 4,828 pounds (2,190 kg), the Model S Plaid is significantly heavier than the Lambo. Will it spell a loss for the high-performance EV?

The Race

As always, Hoonigan does best out of three. Round one is a heads-up race at 1,500 feet. The Lambo makes a perfect start, allowing it to take an early lead. However, the mighty Plaid catches up and takes the win with relative ease. Despite the massive weight disadvantage, nearly 300 extra horsepower, allow the EV to take first blood. Can it keep up?

Round two is at 1,000 feet, but the Lamborghini gets two car lengths. Things are looking bad for the Tesla, in the first half, but once it gets up to speed, it surges past the V-12 Aventador. Tesla wins by about a car length.

A bonus round is in order, despite the Tesla's emerging as a clear winner. This time, it is a 70 mph roll race. Lambo gets the jump, but once again, the powerful Plaid surges past it, beating the Lambo by two car lengths. It's a sad day, indeed, when a V-12 supercar gets destroyed by a family EV. The V-12 Lamborghini may have lost the race, but it sounded epic while doing it.
