The Toyota GR Yaris is one of the most bonkers hot hatchbacks to come out in recent times. This Japanese pocket rocket is, actually, a homologation rally car, and although Toyota hasn’t managed to go racing with it, just yet, the GR Yaris already proved quicker than some of the most iconic cars, ever made. Its small, turbocharged, inline-three has one of the highest specific outputs, but, what you didn’t know is how it sounds with straight pipes.

The video comes from JamersonBU who owns this particular GR Yaris – one of 25,000 made. At some point, he decided that the 1.6-liter turbocharged inline-three is a bit muted and went for a straight-pipe exhaust. The result, as you will hear, is epic – an inline-three that sounds like a six-cylinder. In particular, the sound is a mix of the BMW M3's 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six and the 2.9-liter twin-turbo V-6 from the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrofoglio.

In stock form, the engine in the GR Yaris makes 268 horsepower and 273 pound-feet (370 Nm), which is enough to propel the 2,802-pound (1,271 kg) rally-bred hot hatch to 60 mph (97 km/h) in under 5.0 seconds. While we don’t know how much power is gained with the straight-through exhaust, we can be sure it makes a difference, given how restricted new cars are, in terms of the factory exhaust system.
