Let’s at least hope that the sports car will be worth what we’ll have to pay for it

We know that the Toyota Supra is coming back. We also know it’s going to be awesome. What we don’t know is pretty much everything else about it. Fortunately, the Supra is about ready to make its debut, and with it comes the expectation of finally seeing the car and knowing everything there is to know about it. For now, we can pre-occupy ourselves with a juicy little tidbit about the new Supra that was revealed by a high-ranking Toyota exec to a Dutch auto magazine. In case you’re still hoping that Toyota gives it an affordable price tag, you can let those hopes go because the Supra isn’t going to be cheap.

The Supra and the Z4 will have the same platform, though the adjustment of the chassis will be very different between the two cars

If you’re looking for someone to blame for bursting your bubble, look no further than Gerald Killman, Toyota’s European VP of research and development. Speaking with Dutch site AutoRAI, Killman revealed a few significant items about the upcoming sports car, including the similarities and differences it has with the BMW Z4.

According to Killman, the Supra and the Z4 will have the same platform, though the adjustment of the chassis will be very different between the two cars. In addition, the Toyota sports car will also carry a gas engine. This at least ends any speculation about a hybrid powertrain lurking underneath its hood.

The most important revelation has to do with its price. As expected, Toyota is creating a clear distinction between its new sports car and the Toyota 86, which will remain as the entry-level model. That will manifest it in a number of ways, none more important than in the pricing department. Killman didn’t reveal the exact price of the Supra, but past reports have said that it could cost in the neighborhood of $50,000. It might still sit in that vicinity, but at this point, we’re prepared for anything, including the possibility that it could be much more expensive than $50,000.

If it ends up costing more than its rumored price, you can be sure that a lot of people will be disappointed by it. But that disappointment could also translate to increased expectations, something that Toyota needs to be mindful of. If it’s going to sell the Supra at a premium, you better be sure that it can live up to its price tag.
