The Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series is the ultimate version of the AMG GT lineup. It’s expected to come out by mid-2020, and when it does, expect it to raise hell with a “new” version of the same 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 engine that’s found in all the other AMG GT variants. That’s the word from no less than AMG head Tobias Moers, who told Which Car magazine that the ultimate iteration of the AMG GT will arrive packed to the brim with surprises. Full details about the engine haven’t been announced, but Moers revealed enough to get us hyped for what’s to come. It’s safe to say that Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series will be unlike any version of the AMG GT that we’ve seen so far. That might even be putting it lightly, too.

What is the Mercedes-AMG Black Series

When you talk about a car like the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series, there’s always a sense of trepidation that comes with setting expectations for the car. We all know what the words Black Series mean when it’s attached to a Mercedes-AMG model. To date, there have only been five Black Series models in AMG’s history. The first one — the 2007 Mercedes-Benz SLK 500 AMG Black Series — was launched in 2006. That Mercedes C 63 AMG Black Series followed in 2007, the Mercedes CLK 63 AMG in 2008, and the Mercedes SL 65 AMG Black Series in 2009. Yes, Mercedes-AMG is dusting off the Black Series name after seven years on the shelves, and, fittingly enough, it’s doing so with the intention of using it on the successor of the model that last used the name.

What We Know About the 2020 Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series

The Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series is coming in 2020, folks, and, according to AMG boss Tobias Moers, it’s coming with plenty of surprises in store for all of us. Granted, the full bore of details won’t be released, presumably until the early part of the new year. Fortunately, AMG boss Tobias Moers divulged a few interesting details that are already shaping our opinion of the soon-to-be-hyped-to-oblivion AMG GT Black Series.

In a conversation with Which Car magazine, Moers laid out details about the AMG GT Black Series’ V-8 engine. On the surface, the performance car’s 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 engine will feature the same engine block and cylinder heads as the M178 V-8 unit that can be found in all lower-spec versions of the AMG GT. But as far as similarities go, that’s where it ends between the AMG GT Black Series’ V-8 and the V-8 used by the rest. Moers didn’t elaborate on the specific differences — what’s the point of spilling all the beans now? — Though he did say that the AMG GT Black Series’ V-8 engine won’t be aided by EQ Boost.

That output is significant for several reasons. It’s more powerful than all other versions of the AMG GT that exists today, including the 622-horsepower AMG GT3 race car. As far as production-spec versions go, the AMG GT Black Series will carry 123 more horsepower than the next powerful version of the lineup: the 577-horsepower AMG GT R. More importantly, or at least in the context of competition, the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series will have as much, if not more power than the model that will serve as its direct competition: the 691-horsepower Porsche (991) 911 GT2 RS.

The way Moers talks about it, there’s something curious and intriguing about the V-8 engine that AMG plans to use on the GT Black Series. He claims that the automaker has never done “something like this with an engine before,” adding that it’s a first for AMG. Whatever it is, we should expect something “different,” whatever ‘different’ means in this context.

And that’s just with the engine. See, Mercedes-AMG has more tweaks planned for the AMG GT Black Series. It will also come with a newly developed suspension setup, details of which are predictably still shrouded in mystery. The supercar — I suppose we can call it one by now — will also come equipped with a host of active aerodynamics, including a huge rear wing that Moers admitted was impossible to camouflage. Judging how much that wing sticks out and attracts attention by sticking out, no amount of camouflage can hide that from the prying eyes of spy photographers. The supercar’s tires are also expected to be developed with cutting-edge technology in mind. That’s one of the advantages of having the AMG One already in the fold. What’s intriguing at this point is figuring out what these lessons are and how they’ll translate into the AMG GT Black Series.

Moers is keeping a lot of the car’s secrets close to his chest. As he should, too. The Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series is shaping up to one of those ground-breaking supercars that generate headlines way after it makes its debut. There's no point spilling all the beans with the car not expected to arrive until next year. Rest assured, the AMG GT Black Series is, in some ways, a lot like the Porsche (991) 911 GT2 RS and its other expected rival, the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ. Without knowing too much about it, I expect the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series to be the most rounded and versatile performance car Mercedes-AMG will build outside the AMG One.

If you’re skeptical about it, consider Moers final thoughts about the car. “Expect something different,” he said. “Engine, power output, suspension, aero… everything. There’s not much in common with the GT R.”
