Both Touareg and Tiguan are very successful SUVs; for example just a few months after its official launch, Volkswagen has decided to double the Tiguan’s production! And about the Touareg, well no need to tell, you already know it is one of the best sold models on the Europe market. Reason why Volkswagen decided to try its luck with a third SUV placed between the Tiguan and the Touareg; something the same size with the Audi Q5 that will be launched this week-end in Beijing.

The third SUV will be launched in 2011 and will be a competitor for the newly launched Volvo XC60. Even if will have the same size as the Q5 , the two SUVs won’t share the same platform. The future Volkswagen SUV will be built on a modified version of the next-generation Passat, known internally as PQ47.

Using the lower cost Passat platform means the car will get a space saving transverse engine layout instead of the Q5’s longitudinal arrangement. At the same time, it also paves the way for the Volkswagen Group to introduce possible Skoda and Seat variants of the four-wheel drive.
