Produced between 1987 and 1992, the F40 is one of the most impressive supercars Ferrari ever produced. The car was so successful that although Ferrari planned to only build 400 units, consumer demand led Ferrari to build a total of 1,315 units. Even today, the F40 is a highly successful supercar, with most of them selling for millions if they cross the auction block. There is no doubt in our mind that this one-off F40 Competizione that is being privately sold by RM Sotheby’s will be no exception. The price is available on request, but it is for sure higher than 99% of the world's population can afford.

The history behind this 1,000 HP Ferrari F40 Competizione

Ferrari didn't build the F40 with racing in mind, but it authorized Michelotto to produce a series of units for racing purposes. Michelotto built a total of nineteen F40 LM (Le Mans), seven for use in the Italian Supercar Championship, and another seven F40 GTE for the BPR Global GT Series. These race cars enjoyed such great success, that several other road cars were upgraded for racing.

This particular F40 started its life just like this. The car was completed in November 1989 as a "non-cat, non-adjust" unit and was delivered new to the official Ferrari importer of the Netherlands. Tt stayed there for three years during which period it was upgraded by Cavallino Tuning for racing use. In this initial stage, the engine was not updated, but the suspension, the brakes, and the bodywork endured numerous changes. It was also painted yellow.

Once these changes were completed, the car was raced during the 1993 and 1994 seasons, and in 1995 it was once again modified. It was during this period the standard output was increased from the standard 471 horsepower to 700 horsepower. In 1997, the car was bought by Ferrari collector and racing driver Michel Oprey who raced it until 2006.

From Oprey, the supercar went to a UK-based racing team, who raced it until 2009. In 2019, the car had a full service completed, including crack-testing the suspension, fitting new fuel tanks, and fitting a new fire extinguisher. After that, the car was bought by the current owner who shipped it to Zanasi Group of Maranello, Italy for a cosmetic restoration. There it was stripped down, rebuilt, and repainted in the current Grigio Nardo paint. During the same process, the output was increased from 700 to 1,000 horsepower.
