A 1993 Ford Mustang SVT Cobra R is something of a collector’s car, which is why seeing heavily-modified examples like this one, is quite rare. However, the horsepower junkies at Addiction Motorsports don’t care about collecting cars, which is why they’ve turned the red '93 Cobra into a one-of-a-kind, 1,700-horsepower dragstrip-slaying Foxbody Cobra.

Sean from AutotopiaLA heads to Famoso dragstrip in Bakersfield to share his impressions of the 1993 Mustang Cobra and to talk with the man who built it. Eddie from Addiction Motorsports shares that the car started out as an original, low-mileage 1993 Cobra and has had several iterations, since. All builds, including the current one, are based on a 4.6-liter Ford Modular V-8, but unlike the previous twin-turbo setup, it now has a big single turbo, mounted low, behind the bumper.

The 4.6-liter DOHC V-8 comes from a newer Cobra model and still has the stock block and stock C-heads from a 1999 Ford Mustang Cobra. It has a billet crankshaft and FuelTech electronic fuel injection, and is set up to run on E90 race fuel. Ramming air into the engine is a big, single, Precision XPR 94mm turbocharger, working at over 30 psi (2.07 bar) of boost. All that results in 1,700 rear-wheel horsepower.

Power goes to the rear and is handled by a two-speed PowerGlide transmission, nine-inch rear axle, upgraded, heavy-duty suspension, and 275mm Mickey Thompson Pro Radial tires.

The most impressive thing about the build is how immaculate it is. It still features the stock steel body panels and glass, and a full interior, at least in the front section of the cockpit. As Eddie explains, “it’s as heavy it’s going to get”. Eddi reckons, the Foxbody tips the scales at 3,250 pounds (1,474 kg), without the driver and “it’s not a 2,500-pound tin can”. It even has power windows.

It’s time for all that 1,700 horsepower to be unleashed on the 1,320-feet long drag strip. Upon doing a burnout, the 93’ Cobra sounds like a NASCAR. The driver, however, experiences too much wheelspin in order to post a quarter-mile time. It was on the third run, that Foxbody managed to make a valid pass. Unfortunately, we weren’t given the ET and trap speed numbers, but judging by the duration of the run, we reckon this 93’ Cobra is a six-second car. In any case, it’s always amazing to see a build like these and people with enough balls to turn a collector’s car into something as insane as this.
