Some people acquire retro cars and turn them into glorified garage queens in the wake of a thorough restoration process. Some people acquire retro cars and turn them into hillclimb monsters. Care to guess which way Javi Graña went with his Alpine A110?

Yes, he’s racing it… hard

“This is one odd-looking Alpine A110” you could be thinking, and for good reason. The A110’s sexy silhouette has been tweaked because the car’s owner decided to turn it into a hillclimb special. As a result, it is powered by a 1200-cc Kawasaki ZX12-R engine that makes 200 horsepower at 11,000 rpm. Yes, you read that right, it revs to 11,000 rpm, hence the F1-like sound it makes as it blasts up the hill.

For the sake of the argument, Mercedes-AMG’s upcoming Project One supercar has a 1.6-liter V-6 that revs to 11,000 rpm, too.

Coming back to the A110, it also uses an electronic fuel injection system according to Grumblo, and the rear wheels are driven by a chain, just like in a motorcycle. What’s more, the chain connects to a custom limited-slip differential and the suspension setup includes motorcycle shocks.

The steering is custom-made by Outeda Racing while stopping power comes from a Wilwood Engineering setup with four-piston calipers in the front and two-piston ones in the rear.

At least the car’s body is still original - albeit for the wide wheel arches and the roof scoop - and it even retains the original Renault blue. Even more impressive, the whole build tips the scales at just 530 kilos (or about 1169 pounds), which is bonkers.
