• This BMW M5 Test Mule Raises A Lot Of Questions

The strange BMW M5 test mule has got us wondering what BMW is working on

LISTEN 01:42

It seems BMW might be working on another version of their M5, as a test car was spotted on the street with what seems to be a wider track. This forced the engineers from BMW to put extended fenders. It’s not just the track but the tires that are wider. To give some perspective, the normal BMW M5 has 275 mm wide rear tires, while the M5 Competition has 285 mm wide tires. On the photos, you can clearly see that the rear tire width is 295.

Is This BMW M5 Really Something New?

Other than the fender extensions, wider tires, and different wheels, there don’t seem to be other changes to the super-sedan. Since BMW is keeping a tight lip and the test mule looks pretty much the same as any other BMW F90 M5, we can only guess at this point.

BMW’s engineers could be working on a new M5, disguising it as the current model – something a lot of carmakers have started doing in recent years.

Another possibility could be that BMW is working on a special edition for the 50th anniversary of BMW M.

A third option could be an even more hardcore version of the current M5. The M5 CS has already been announced and it’s not going to have wider fenders, so this could, potentially, be a CSL.

Whatever the case, we are sure those extended fenders will have a more integrated look in the production car. Until then, we can only guess what the Bavarian manufacturer has in store for us.

After high school I earned a master’s degree in marketing and a Master of Arts in Media and Communications. Over the years, I’ve practiced and become skilled in precision driving and to date have test driven more than 250 cars across the globe. Over the years, I’ve picked up basic mechanical knowledge and have even taken part in the restoration of a 1964 Jaguar E-Type and an Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint. Lately, I’ve taken a fancy to automotive photography, and while modern cars are my primary passion, I also have a love for Asian Martial Arts, swimming, war history, craft beer, historical weapons, and car restoration. In time, I plan my own classic car restoration and hope to earn my racing certificate, after which I expect to establish my own racing team.  Read full bio
