It is one thing to be inspired by a product, and another to copy a product. Unfortunately, some Chinese automakers fall under the second category. We’ve seen ripped-off versions of Minis, Teslas, BMWs, and the latest one to join that ‘flattered’ list is the Ford F-150 Raptor. What we see here is not a Ford F-150 Raptor modified by some tuner who has slapped its badge on it. This truck is a production-version vehicle from Foton. Foton’s latest pickup truck called the Da Jiang Jun is nothing but an F-150 Raptor face with some lackluster mills under the hood.

The Ford F-150 Raptor Is The Latest Target

Yes, the F-150 Raptor is a smart and handsome truck, but that doesn’t mean an automaker can blatantly copy-paste the design. Images of the Da Jiang Jun, which stands for “The Big General”, leaked earlier this year and many folks thought it was a prank, but as it turns out, it’s not. Foton recently released a few more photos of the Da Jiang Jun that confirm that the truck is the real deal.

While it looks like the F-150 Raptor on the outside, it is nowhere close to the Ford product in any other sense. For starters, this is a midsize truck, unlike the full-size F-150 Raptor. There’s no powerful mill under the hood, either. The Foton Da Jiang Jun is powered by a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder turbocharged gas mill that produces 238 horses. Foton is also offering oil-burner options in the form of a 2.0- or 2.5-liter mill. One thing, however, that looks good here is the presence of a manual transmission.

There Are A Lot Of Examples Out There

This is not the first time Chinese automakers have ‘Control C + Control V’ the design. Some cars that come to mind are the Landwind X7 that is the Range Rover Evoque’s long-lost twin. Shuanghuan SCEO is a ripped-off BMW X5, Zotye SR9 ‘heavily-inspired’ by Porsche Macan, and the worst of all, the Geely Merrie 300 that has a Mercedes C-Class front end without any difference whatsoever! Mind you, Geely is not some small-time automaker. This group owns Volvo and Lotus among many other companies. These are just a few of the many copied designs over the years.

Final Thoughts

Da Jiang Jun is a classic example of how unoriginal some Chinese automakers can get. The truck is all set to debut at the Beijing Auto Show on 26th September, and we’ll have to see how people all across the globe react to it. Do you think Ford will take legal action against Foton?
