The Jaguar F Type R has an obvious power advantage, but the BMW has a trick up its sleeve
The M4 Competition's superb chassis, torquey engine, and brilliant transmission allow it to punch above its weight
The Jaguar F Type R is a love letter to old-school sports cars
When it came out, the F Type's goal was to be the E Type's spiritual successor. The overall aesthetics, including the clamshell hood, are an obvious hint
But it's what's under the hood that matters today
Being the R version, the Jaguar F Type is powered by a 5.0-liter supercharged V-8 with 575 hp and 516 lb/ft. Power is routed through a ZF, 8-speed automatic
The BMW M4 Competition is a much newer platform than the F Type
The G29 generation was introduced in 2020 and showcases the very latest from BMW's M-division. For 2019 the F Type was refreshed, but underneath, it's the same platform from 2013
The BMW M4 Competition may have more power than advertized
While not yet confirmed, there's an obvious pattern to how BMW rates its engines. The 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline-six here is rated at 503 hp and 479 lb/ft
More driven wheels mean better traction, but also more weight
After 2018, all V-8-powered Jaguar F Types come with an all-wheel-drive setup. This allows the F Type R to, allegedly, sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds
A BMW M4 Competition xDrive would have made for a more fair race
That said, the M4 Competition G29 launches surprisingly well for a rear-wheel-drive car. According to BMW, as equipped the M4 Competition could sprint to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds
Jaguar has more power, but BMW's transmission is better calibrated
The Jaguar's transmission short-shifts into 2nd, allowing BMW to take the first race. While the transmissions are almost identical, it goes to show the importance of fine-tuning
The Jaguar F Type R makes a comeback
BMW consistently experiences delays at the start while the Jaguar jumps off like a cat. 1,320 feet later, it wins the race, evening the score. It also sounds like a dinosaur with asthma
The 3rd and final race revealed the Jaguar F Type R as the winner
The more powerful Jaguar consistently launched better. To everyone's surprise, the BMW, with its snappier gear-changes, was catching up, but 1/4-mile just wasn't enough
The result from the rolling race evened the score
From a 30 mph roll, the BMW M4 Competition managed to beat the Jaguar. It looked like the Jaguar was about to start closing in, but it would have needed a lot more room to stretch its legs
Swipe up to see more of both cars and how they perform
The BMW M4 Competition is a technological marvel and proved capable enough to keep up with the much more powerful Jag. The British brute, however, is a charming dinosaur and we love it for that
