This 2JZ-powered BMW E92 drift car throws a smoke screen in celebration of BMW’s new models

Goodwood Festival of Speed is one of the most spectacular automotive events, and in 2022, the 29th edition took place. The event started on Thursday, June 23, and ended on Sunday, June 26. As always, some of the most epic machines of all shapes, sizes, classes, powertrains, etc. were showcased at the event in West Sussex. By far, one of the greatest shows was put up by James Deane’s BMW M3 E92, which disappeared entirely into a cloud of smoke at one point.

James “The Machine” Deane took the highly-modified BMW drift car, which is dialed-in perfectly for epic side angles. It’s probably a good time to mention that this wasn’t even a BMW M3, to begin with. Rather, it was a humble 320d that got a 2JZ swap. The Japanese inline-six is mated to a sequential transmission and packs close to 900 horsepower.

The tail-happy “Beemer” also benefits from an adjustable coil-over suspension, beefy Falken tires that are 285/40 R18 at the back, and a hydraulic handbrake. The interior, as you would expect, is fully stripped out and features a carbon bucket seat for the pilot. There’s also an eight-point roll-cage, a six-point harness, and a fire-suppression system. Topping off this high-end drift build is a carbon Kevlar wide body kit that has been painted over rather than wrapped.

While we don’t know whether or not the car ever got the M3 E92’s S65 V-8 engine, as you see in the video, the Toyota Supra’s 2JZ unit fits perfectly. More importantly, with around 900 horsepower from the Japanese inline-six, the BMW E92 drift car puts on one heck of a show. Even more impressive is the day James Deane takes this 900-horsepower BMW E92 and drifts up the narrow and technical Goodwood course while turning rubber into smoke on every corner and in-between.

A fitting celebration for BMW’s array of new vehicles, which were also brought to the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Among them were the BMW M4 CSL, M760e, i7, iX1, and of course, the highly anticipated return of the BMW M3 Touring. Nevertheless, it was the drift car with Falken livery that stole the show on the race course. You can check out the short footage to see, exactly, what we are on about.

Born in 1992, I come from a family of motoring enthusiasts. My passion for cars was awoken at the age of six, when I saw a Lamborghini Diablo SV in a magazine. After high school I earned a master’s degree in marketing and a Master of Arts in Media and Communications. Over the years, I’ve practiced and become skilled in precision driving and to date have test driven more than 250 cars across the globe. Over the years, I’ve picked up basic mechanical knowledge and have even taken part in the restoration of a 1964 Jaguar E-Type and an Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint. Lately, I’ve taken a fancy to automotive photography, and while modern cars are my primary passion, I also have a love for Asian Martial Arts, swimming, war history, craft beer, historical weapons, and car restoration. In time, I plan my own classic car restoration and hope to earn my racing certificate, after which I expect to establish my own racing team.  Read full bio
