While pure stock drag racing remains a popular class to this day, here's taking a look at what it was like gunning it down the drag strip back in the 80s.

This video with its grainy lines and off-beat commentary, about two of the greatest names amongst muscle cars going head to head, sure does ring the nostalgia bell pretty hard. Strangely, the video has the correct aspect ratio of 16:9 rather than the 4:3 which was the norm back then.

1968 Shelby Mustang GT500

The really Shelby Mustang needs no introduction. It was the car that got the ball rolling for generations of muscle car lovers. You can't think 68 Mustang and not relive the iconic chase sequence from Bullitt with Steve Mcqueen and the Dodge Charger.

Speaking of the '68 Shelby GT500 that took part in this nostalgic 80s race, under the hood was a 428 V-8 that had 355 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque, which featured an automatic transmission. The GT500 weighed 3,241 pounds.

1972 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am

Pontiac may be gone, but the Firebird certainly was and still is one of the American brand's most recognizable names, ever!! First introduced back in 1967, the Mk1 Firebird shared its F-Body platform with the Camaro. The second-gen Pontiac Firebird that came along in 1970, like the one seen here, was the most biblical Firebird ever produced.

This particular car has the 455 HO. Its 7.5-liter V-8 was good for 335 horsepower and 480 lb-ft of torque. Power was sent to the rear wheels via a four-speed automatic transmission. The Trans Am weighed 3,695 pounds.

The Race

The lights go out and both cars couldn't have had a better launch. The Shelby however, had the edge off the line. The Ford managed to put its nose ahead early on in the race and it hung on to the lead all the way to the finish line, but only just. The results were as follows:

1/4 Mile Time Reults

'68 Shelby Mustang GT500

'72 Pontiac FIrebird Trans Am

14.28s @95.5 mph

14.27 @98.46mph

Bonus Round

The video also had footage of a 1969 Mustang 428 four-speed giving it the beans clocking in a time of 14 seconds flat at 100.22 mph.
