Porsche 988 Vision rendering shows a potential Porsche rival for the likes of Ferrari F8 Tributo and McLaren 720S

I know that the 911 is easily the most recognizable Porsche out there. It is a car so well grafted into our mind that we all know it has an engine positioned at the rear, behind the rear axle. Yet, if you are in a bit more know about the Porsche 911, then it’s no news that all the best Porsche race cars have been mid-engined. Including the latest Porsche 911 RSR who had to go mid-engine to remain competitive in WEC’s LMGTE-PRO race competition. Some other notable examples include Le Mans winners 919 Hybrid and 917K, the 911 GT1, or the magnificent Cayman GT4.

Yet, the enthusiast Internet warriors and everyone who knows a thing or two about cars want Porsche to build a proper mid-engine supercar that could compete with the likes of F8 Tributo and McLaren 720S. Enter the Porsche 988 Vision, a beautiful virtual creation coming from the minds of the designers over at Colorsponge and Invisive. They took the clean styling approach you can recognize from the 918 Spyder and then intertwined it with Taycan influences.

Porsche 988 Vision Design Seems Perfect

Colorsponge and Invisive most certainly did a fantastic job in capturing a set of proper Porsche stylistic virtues into a car that shares a mid-engine layout with the 918 Spyder. The powerful fenders, large air intakes, low front bonnet as well as the 911-ish shape of the roof really do look like someone from Porsche designed it. I am actually rather sure that Porsche’s PR department and division for product planning closely follow such developments as well as people response to the 988 Vision. This sort of renderings provide car companies with a fantastic platform to receive some crucial market feedback at practically no extra cost.

While extremely beautiful, the possible production version of the 988 has some severe hurdles to overcome.

See, if Porsche decides to produce it one day, the 988 will have to be a bit cheaper compared to its competitors from Ferrari and McLaren. Unfortunately for Porsche enthusiasts, Volkswagen already produces a car like that. It is called the Audi R8. I am reasonably sure that when the R8 reaches its demise and possibly gets replaced by the electric-powered successor, only then we will start seeing Porsche 988 test mules lapping the ’Ring. After all, the Volkswagen Group is all too smart to resort to cannibalism.

Apart from that, I’ve discussed the possibility of a Porsche mid-engine hypercar as well.

The alleged 988 is a different bag of chips. It could sport some kind of hybrid propulsion system, because, well, hype.

Yet, the reality is that I'd accept it with some kind of next-gen eight-cylinder engine or even a super-powerful six-cylinder from the 911.

What If Porsche Never Produces a Mid-Engine Supercar?

This is a distinct possibility. Especially now when the whole automotive world turns its focus to electric and electrified vehicles. The possible 988 could just become an electric car based around the Porsche Taycan architecture. After all, we have learned before that manufacturers need less time and money to develop a high-speed electric sports cars or supercars. That is why I believe that Taycan architecture will sport some kind of a coupé. The Taycan itself is a monster with a dual electric motor setup good for 600+ horsepower, four-wheel steering, and ceramic brakes. Just imagine it as a two-door coupé - I can definitely see it shaped as this 988 Vision.

The Porsche 988 Vision rendering is a beautiful exploration of the Porsche mid-engine prospects. Not only does it give us something to think and dream about, but the 988 Vision almost professionally combines the stylistic features of the Porsche and packs it in a shape I like. For me, the big deal here is the integration of advanced features such as cameras instead of rearview mirrors, vibrant LED treatment front and back, and quite massive air intakes. These actually show me that the 988 Vision could have an ICE after all. No need for such intakes on an electric supercar. Just take a glance at the latest Tesla Roadster.
