This Subaru Impreza 22B is 22 years old, but still brand new

A few days ago, we watched Doug DeMuro driving a Subaru Impreza 22B to discover why it was the ultimate incarnation of the iconic Japanese performance compact. We also discussed how the 22B was built in just 424 units and how it’s now worth more than $100,000. Well, it turns out that the Impreza 22B is even more expensive than that. A pristine example with just 271 miles on the odometer showed up for sale via Appreciating Classics, and it’s being offered for a whopping £295,000. That’s around $370,000 as of July 2020.

Granted, this specific 22B is a notably more expensive than the norm because it's practically brand new.

271 miles on the odo is incredibly low, and it sounds like this car was kept into storage all these years. And it’s a lot of years because the 22B was built in 1998. The photos and the description confirm the car’s pristine state. The rear seats still have the original protection in place; there are paper stickers on the headlamps, and "P Zero" decals on the tires.

The description goes on to say that the car was purchased as a family investment, and it has been driven only a couple of times when new. Appreciating Classics bought the car from the original owner and performed a full service and changed the original cambelt, pulleys, and water pump. They also changed all fluids and filters. The new parts are original from Subaru, so the car is now not only brand-new but also in perfect working state as it was back in 1998. The paint was polished, so everything looks spotless and sparkling clean.

The $370,000 selling price is massive and surpasses the sticker for a brand-new McLaren 720S,, but hey, if you want to buy a brand-new Impreza 22B 22 years later, it’s the only option you have. And let’s not forget that this is a rally-spec car for the road.

This 22B is one of only 16 cars sold by Subaru in the United Kingdom, and one of only 24 offered outside Japan.

The Subaru Impreza 22B was produced for only five months in 1998 to celebrate the company’s 40th anniversary as well as its third consecutive title in the FIA World Rally Championship. The Impreza 22B was a widebody version of the STi, featuring flared fenders taken from the rally car, extra vents on the engine hood, a unique front bumper, and 17-inch wheels. The 22B also featured the largest rear wing fitted on a road-legal Impreza.

Under the hood, the 22B features a bespoke flat-four engine with displacement increased from the STi’s 2.0 liters to 2.2. The engine was officially rated at 276 horsepower and 268 pound-feet of torque, but owners claim that the 22B was actually good for 300 horsepower.

The Impreza 22B was mostly developed for the Japanese market, with 400 units sold in Subaru’s home country. Only 24 examples were built for export markets, with 16 sold in the United Kingdom and five in Australia. Total production numbers come in at just 424 units. The 22B wasn’t offered in the United States.
