Sedans have been losing popularity even since the first SUV hit the market and that decline is still ongoing today. At the same time, a sedan kind of goes against the idea of a pure-breed sports car/supercar, which is why McLaren will never build one just like it won’t build a crossover or an SUV. But what if?

You can make a fairly good image of what a four-door McLaren might look like from Andrey Sulemin’s McLaren 44 design study. We repeat, such a car isn’t going to come out of Woking for the foreseeable future. In fact, back in 2017, CEO Mike Flewitt made it clear that there’s no room for a four-door vehicle at McLaren. Four seats, well, maybe if the market has such desires, but not four doors – those are out of the question.

As it turns out, trying to squeeze four human beings inside a four-door McLaren isn’t the easiest design task one can ask for. In fact, the designer admits that the struggled with making the car spacious enough without trumping the McLaren DNA. Simultaneously, he also had to tone down the typical aggressiveness that goes hand in hand with performance but is quite unnecessary on a four-door design.

In this current vision, the engine would go in the front, which is another feature that goes against the idea of an out-and-out sports car/supercar, especially one coming out of McLaren’s workshops.

The closest thing to a practical McLaren that you can buy at the time of writing is the company’s GT, which can carry up to 750 liters (cubic feet) of luggage. At the same time, it’s a genuine sports car since motivation comes from McLaren’s 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 tuned to produce 612 horsepower. That, in turns, allows it to blast from naught to 60 mph in 3.2 seconds en route to a top speed of 203 mph.
