The Grand Wagoneer Concept looks every bit like the production model that we can expect to see in dealership showrooms in 2022. But 2022 is still a ways away, and as we wait for the production-spec Grand Wagoneer to arrive, we can spend that time admiring all the renderings that have already been released, a lot of which show the hulking SUV in different forms and functions.

One rendering, in particular, caught our attention, not because of who created it — Abimelec Design — but because of what he created. This, ladies and gentlemen, is the Jeep Grand Wagoneer Woody, a creation so nostalgic you can smell the air of the 1980s from your computer screens.

What are the historical ties between the Jeep Wagoneer and the woodies?

A lot more than most people realize. See, the Jeep Grand Wagoneer Concept might be an all-new model, but the nameplate is not at all new. It was used in various capacities by Jeep and other automakers — Kaiser Motors and American Motors — from 1963 to 1993.

It was eventually retired after a 30-year run, but the OG Wagoneer was one of the most popular SUVs of the time that was dressed in the woody car body style. To this day, you can still buy a used Wagoneer woody of various states at online car sites, proving that there’s still a healthy following for the nameplate and the car body style that it came in during a significant part of its original production run.

What’s so special about Abimelec Design’s rendering of the Jeep Grand Wagoneer Concept Woody?

When Jeep unveiled the Grand Wagoneer Concept, you knew it was only a matter of time before someone would make a rendering of the concept dressed in full woody gear. It turns out, none of us have even gotten a good night's sleep before the first woody-inspired rendering of the concept came to our attention.

The Jeep Wagoneer Woodies of yesteryear were largely defined by the wooden panels that dominated the side profile of the SUV. Abimelec Design incorporated that same look in his rendering of the new Grand Wagoneer Concept.

The only things that look out of place are the wooden doors. Or maybe they’re painted that way to fall in line with the woody theme. Either way, this is one rendering that I wouldn’t mind seeing on the road in the future. Heck, I wouldn’t be surprised if Jeep offers a woody package for the production version of the Grand Wagoneer once the SUV is in the market.

Is Jeep going to offer a woody package for the production-spec Grand Wagoneer?

It’s too early to tell considering that the production version of the large SUV isn’t going to hit the market until 2022. But make no mistake about it, if Jeep wants the Grand Wagoneer to be a hit, a woody package would go a long way in achieving that. Ok, maybe not a long way, but it’s one option that you can be sure a lot of people will avail if it does become available, either as a package or even a special edition model. It’s been a while since a production SUV rolled around the streets with wood panels on its sides. That wait should come to an end, if only because the woody car body style is on the verge of its own renaissance.
