• This Race Between a Chevy C8 Corvette and a Rolls-Royce Wraith Hardly Seems Fair

It’s all sorts of entertaining, though

LISTEN 02:46

The Chevrolet Corvette C8 and the Rolls-Royce Wraith share a few things in common. Both are two-door models. Both are also fast, powerful, and, well, that’s pretty much it. If you thought of two premium models that couldn’t be more different from one another, you’d probably land at the mid-engine sports car and the luxury rig on four wheels.

Fortunately, drag races don’t discriminate. If you have a car that can burn rubber on a strip, you’re more than welcome to try your luck against an equally potent opponent. Even better, if you have someone like Hennessey who’s willing to host a race between a Chevrolet Corvette C8 and a Rolls-Royce Wraith, then you get your fill of fun and entertainment, all wrapped in a four-minute video that’s a must-watch if you have a modicum of spare time.

The tale of the tape?

The Chevrolet Corvette C8 and the Rolls-Royce Wraith couldn’t be more different from one another.

One is a mid-engined sports car that calls a drag strip home. The other is a two-door luxury coupe that you normally find in cocktail parties.

On that end, Hennessey isn’t the type to let image and stature get in the way of a good drag race. That’s why we’re making a tale of the tape between the Corvette C8 and the Wraith. Despite their differences, the Corvette C8 and the Rolls-Royce Wraith make for great protagonists in a drag race.

One is powered by a 6.2-liter LT2 engine that produces 495 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque while the other runs on a 6.6-liter twin-turbocharged V-12 engine that produces 624 horsepower and 605 pound-feet of torque.

The Wraith has a clear advantage over the Corvette C8 in that department, but the Chevy does benefit from weighing less — 3,800 pounds for the Wraith and 3,647 pounds for the Corvette C8 — than its Rolls-Royce counterpart by 150 pounds.

Is the Wraith’s bigger engine and higher output enough to beat the lighter Corvette C8 in a drag race? Hennessey didn’t wait for an answer to that question; it set up a race between the two instead.

Who won?

Knowing what we know about both the Corvette C8 and the Wraith, it’s not that hard to figure out who takes the flag in this race. And yes, it wasn’t even close, or at least the first race wasn’t. The second race between the two models was more competitive, but only after specific conditions were added to seemingly level the playing field.

In the end, though, there weren’t any upsets in this race. The car we all thought would win did.

Kirby’s first exposure into the world of automobiles happened when he caught Knight Rider on television as a five-year old boy. David Hasselhoff didn’t leave much of an impression on him (that happened later on in Baywatch), but KITT certainly did. To this day, Kirby remains convinced that he will one day own a car with the same ‘spirit’ as the original KITT (not the 2008 monstrosity). He doesn't know when that will be, but until then, he’s committed to expressing his love for KITT, and all cars for that matter, here at TopSpeed.  Read full bio
