The SUV and crossover craze continues, as manufacturers keep churning out high-riding vehicles, in response to the ever-increasing customer demand. As far as the business side of things goes, it is completely understandable, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a market for cars or even compact vehicles. GM in particular has been teasing us with some pretty interesting stuff, some of which (or all) won’t make it to production, and this hatchback rendering is the latest example.

The hatchback rendering is posted on GM’s official Instagram profile. Credit for the execution goes to Brian Malczewski (@brianmalczewski) - the lead exterior designer behind the GMC Hummer EV.} The hatchback doesn’t look like any existing vehicle from GM’s lineup, so we cannot talk about production at this point. Another similar rendering, posted on GM’s Instagram page is a rendering by Zhou Fang (@z.fang1988), which was believed to be a hint at a potential successor to the Cadillac XLR.

Another reason this hatchback rendering will probably remain just that is the 2023 Cadillac Lyriq show car, which will showcase some of GM’s future tech and design language. Nevertheless, the Lyriq is a crossover, which is further testimony to what the main focus is.

The hatchback rendering somewhat resembles the recently discontinued Chevrolet Sonic.} It is unclear whether they’ll be making a new one, but they love teasing us with different renderings. Should they decided to make it, we hope there will be an “SS” version. Of course, given the current situation, it’s much more likely it will be an EV, rather than a hot hatch.
