Porsche dropped a 4.0-liter naturally-aspirated mill inside the latest iteration of the 718 Cayman. That’s how the GT4 gets 414 horsepower at 7,600 rpm and 309 pound-feet of twist at 5,000. Oh, end the engine redlines at 8,100 rpm, which is more like something you’d see in a race car than in your run-of-the-mill daily driver. Except this is Porsche, and the 718 Cayman GT4 can do both - equally well.

The very best of two worlds

When Porsche introduced the Cayman back in September 2005 at the Frankfurt Motor Show, we stopped and wondered: so, this is the fixed roof version of the Boxster, right? Well, no, not according to Porsche.

See, the original, 295-horsepower Cayman S shared 40-percent of its bits and bobs with the 987-gen Boxster. Subsequently, the latter shared roughly 55-percent of its parts with the 997 911 Porsche Carrera. So, what’s the gist, then?

So, it’s basically a niche car, one that puts a lower sticker price on thrilling driving dynamics without throwing day-to-day comfort under the bus.

That said, it’s even more impressing how the souped-up 2020 718 Cayman GT4 is still loyal to this creed. In a way, the Cayman might be named after the Latin American alligator, but it doesn’t bite unless you really want it to.

And speaking of bite, the video provides some interesting performance figures for the GT4, some which put it right at the border between sports car and supercar. Check it out.
