The McLaren F1 is a legend. It's probably the most legendary car from the 1990s, and its iconic status surpasses that of many older classics. When it arrived in 1992, it was the most revolutionary production model on the market. It was made from carbon-fiber, it features a three-seat layout with the driver's seat in the center and smart packaging for luggage. On top of that, it was powerful and fast thanks to a V-12 engine designed by BMW. This car was so potent that it managed to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans with minor modifications. As if that wasn't enough, McLaren built even more extreme versions of the F1, like the LM, GT, and GTR. The GTR Longtail was just featured by YouTube channel TheSupercarDriver, and it teaches you everything you need to know about it.

A race car converted for road use

The F1 GTR was originally developed for racing only. It hit the track for the first time in 1995 with small changes compared to the road car. The Longtail version, which is showcased in the video, was developed for the 1997 racing season when the FIA changed the rules for the GT1 class. McLaren built ten cars with Longtail specification out of a total production run of 28 GTRs. Some regular GTRs were later converted into Longtail models.

More importantly, after they were retired from racing, some Longtail models were converted by Lanzante to road-legal specs. These conversions had their ride height increased, and the racing fuel tank replaces by a traditional tank and fuel cap system. Lanzante also removed the restrictor on the engine. At the same time, they weren't fitted the comfort features of a road-legal F1, so they were lighter and more powerful than their siblings. As a result, they're considered to be the ultimate incarnation of the McLaren F1. Find out more about it in the video below.
