It’s in Japan, but our friends over there should take note of this

If you’re attending the Tokyo Auto Salon on January 10, you can score a Nissan GT-R NISMO GT500 race car if you order tickets to the show early. No, you’re not getting an actual GT-R NISMO GT500 race car. Instead, you’re receiving a toy version of the racer courtesy of Japanese toy car maker Tomica. Pre-sale tickets for Friday, January 10, will cost 4,000 yen or around $37 based on current exchange rates. The cost of the ticket already includes the Tomica GT-R NISMO GT500. Costs of tickets for Saturday, January 11, and Sunday, January 12 add up to 3,000 yen or almost $28. If you’re not looking to score the Tomica GT-R NISMO GT500, the cost of tickets for January 10 is 3,000 yen and only 2,000 yen ($18.5) for January 11 and 12.

For those of you who aren’t aware of Tomica, the Japanese toy car maker is a lot like {Hot Wheels} and {Matchbox} in the U.S.

It’s not as popular in our shores but Walmart, among other toy chains, does carry a selection in its store. The important thing is that Tomica is huge in Japan and a lot of other Asian countries. It mostly creates toy cars from Japanese automakers, but Tomica has also branched out to include some of our favorite European brands, including Ferrari, McLaren, and Lamborghini.

This time, though, the spotlight is firmly on the Nissan GT-R NISMO GT500 race car. It will be immortalized in Tomica form as part of the toy company’s 50th anniversary. The all-black racer even pays homage to that with a 50th-anniversary sticker on the side of one door and a sticker of the Tokyo Auto Salon on the other side.

As for why the Nissan GT-R NISMO GT500 was chosen as the commemorative car to celebrate Tomica’s 50th-anniversary celebration at the 2020 Tokyo Salon, that likely boils down to the fact that the high-powered race car received huge updates ahead of the 2020 Super GT season where it will be competing. The GT-R NISMO GT500 will compete against the likes of the Toyota Supra GT500 and the front-engine Honda NSX race car so all the updates it received should come in handy when racing season officially starts.

The 2020 Super GT season kicks off on April 11 and 12 at Okayama, Japan. But before the season starts, those attending the 2020 Tokyo Auto Salon can get their hands on a special edition Tomica Nissan GT-R NISMO GT500 toy race car. Seems like a good way to keep yourselves busy while waiting for the season to start.

Kirby’s first exposure into the world of automobiles happened when he caught Knight Rider on television as a five-year old boy. David Hasselhoff didn’t leave much of an impression on him (that happened later on in Baywatch), but KITT certainly did. To this day, Kirby remains convinced that he will one day own a car with the same ‘spirit’ as the original KITT (not the 2008 monstrosity). He doesn't know when that will be, but until then, he’s committed to expressing his love for KITT, and all cars for that matter, here at TopSpeed.  Read More
