Toyota Has Hiked The Prices of The 2020 Tacoma And It Has Gotten All The More Dearer Now

When you are the market leader and basically run the show, you can do whatever you want. Well, at least that’s what Toyota is doing with the Tacoma. The Tacoma has been the segment leader for 14 years in a row now and the sales are only growing every year. Although the base Tacoma received a moderate price hike, the Tacoma TRD Pro is what caught our attention. According to CarsDirect.com, the 2020 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro will get a $1,000 price tag hike, whereas the base 2020 Tacoma will be dearer by only $200.

That’s Not A Small Increase Whatsoever

The 2020 Toyota Tacoma will be offered with a hike of $200 over the 2019 model. This means the starting price will be $26,050. As for the TRD Pro, the starting price of the 2020 model is $45,080, a cool 1,000 bucks extra. If you opt for the automatic transmission, you will end up shelling out $2,750 extra for it over the base price of the TRD Pro. When compared to its primary competitors, the Tacoma is indeed priced at a premium. The 2020 Chevy Colorado starts at just $21,300, whereas the ZR2, TRD Pro’s counterpart, starts at $41,400. The Ford Ranger, on the other hand, starts at $24,300 for the base trim. The Ranger Raptor will soon be here, but for now, the Lariat trim offers the most ruggedness and luxury, and it is priced from $32,390.

The TRD Pro Comes With Quite A Few Changes

Speaking of the 2020 Tacoma TRD Pro, it receives the maximum changes when compared to the other trims. It comes with new sequential LED headlights and daytime running lights, new 16-inch wheels, and black inserts in the taillights to make it look all the more aggressive. The trim also comes with a new exterior shade - an Army Green paint job, thus completing the color palette which already has shades like the Super White, Midnight Black Metallic, and Magnetic Gray Metallic. For the 2020 model, the Toyota Tacoma comes with a bigger 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay as well as Amazon Alexa. Finally, Toyota has caved into the peer pressure. The TRD Pro also comes with a new set of wheels that are about four pounds lighter than the last set. The Fox shocks and rear springs have been re-tuned to accommodate the lighter wheels.

Same Mills Under The Hood

The best part about the 2020 Tacoma is that all the trims are fitted with the Toyota Safety Sense Plus pack. This includes pre-collision warning, pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, automatic high-beams, and radar cruise control. The towing capabilities have not changed as the Toyota Tacoma can still tow up to 6,800 pounds. Under the hood, it still comes with the same set of powertrains. There's a 2.7-liter, naturally aspirated four-cylinder mill that churns out 159 ponies and 180 pound-feet of torque, and a 3.5-liter, V-6 mill that develops 278 horses and 265 pound-feet of torque. Both the engines are mated to a six-speed automatic transmission system as standard, but the larger V-6 mill can be mated to a six-speed manual as well. That is some good news for the stick shifters. The V-6 Tacomas come standard with a tow kit that includes a hitch, an engine oil cooler, a power steering cooler, an automatic transmission fluid cooler, and a 130-amp alternator.

Final Thoughts

Even though the Tacoma is the most expensive pickup truck in the segment, it is miles ahead of the competition. In July 2019 alone, Toyota moved 20,416 examples of the Tacoma. In fact, in 2018, Toyota sold more than 200,000 Tacomas in a single year for the first time since its inception - 245,659 examples, to be more precise. This was an increase of 24 percent over the 2017 sales figures. Toyota’s biggest rival is the phenom from GM's stable, the Chevy Colorado. Chevy sold a combined 168,334 examples of the GMC Canyon and Chevrolet Colorado. If this is not sheer dominance, I don’t know what is.
