The Toyota Supra Concept may hog the headlines at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show, but there’s another Toyota model that’s headed to the big dance. That model also happens to be the next-generation hatchback version of the company’s best-selling model, the Corolla. It’s also known as the Auris in Europe, but just as that it’s important for the folks over there, it’s arrival in the U.S. — if it comes to that — will come with the car being called the Corolla iM.

There aren’t that many details about the Toyota Corolla hatchback to go by at this point. What we do know is that the model will be developed together with the 12th-generation Toyota Corolla sedan. Like the sedan, the hatchback model will make use of Toyota’s TNGA modular platform, the same platform that currently underpins both the Camry and the Prius.

Toyota’s done a good job to keep the car’s design a mystery. Spy shots of the test mule didn’t reveal much, nor did the teaser image Toyota released alongside the announcement of its Geneva debut. To the latter’s credit, it did show an interesting setup for the lights and a sloping roofline that suggests that the car could be a little longer than we expected.

On the side of powertrains, Toyota has confirmed that the Euro-spec Auris hatch will feature a new 2.0-liter inline-four engine that comes with 40 percent thermal efficiency and improved torque across its entire powerband. The four-cylinder will be paired with a hybrid system that Toyota claims will have improved fuel economy and better driving performance.

We’ll reserve our judgments for the car’s performance and efficiency until we get to drive one, but from the looks of things, the new Corolla hatchback should make its nameplate proud.
