The ‘Carwow’ team, spearheaded by Mat Watson, staged a tug-of-war between three SUVs that belong to different segments. One is a new EV, the other, its sibling, a luxurious family SUV, and the final one, an iconic off-roader. We are talking about the BMW iX, the BMW X7, and the Mercedes-AMG G63. Since this is a tug-of-war, you’d expect the G63 to be the winner, since it comes with a lot of tech and equipment that has to do with traction and stability. But, is that really the case?

What Are We Dealing With Here?

Power is, obviously, sent to all four wheels since you’ve got a motor on each axle. It is a pretty heavy vehicle – which is a good thing in a tug-of-war – tipping the scales at 5,534 pounds (2,510 kilos). The iX has a towing capacity of 5,512 pounds (2,500 kilos).

An eight-speed automatic gearbox routes power to all four wheels. The X7 is a tad bit lighter than the iX, weighing in at 5,490 pounds (2,490 kilos). It can tow up to 7,716 pounds (3,500 kilos).

Oomph is sent to all four wheels via a nine-speed automatic gearbox. It even comes with a lot of off-road goodies, like three locking diffs, a low-range mode for the gearbox, etc. The G63 is heavier than the X7, weighing in at 5,644 pounds (2,560 kilos).

BMW iX vs BMW X7

The first round was between the Bimmers. Being very similar in most aspects, this was bound to be a close war. Both the SUVs had all their wheels spinning, but neither got an edge over the other. It looked like the war was heading towards a stalemate, but out of nowhere, the iX lost all traction and the X7 pulled it effortlessly. They gave it a shot once again. This time, the X7 started tugging it from the start. The iX tried to fight it, but eventually lost.

Mercedes-AMG G63 vs BMW X7

Since the X7 was a little too much for the iX, they decided to swap it with the luxurious, iconic off-roader from the house of Mercedes-AMG – the G63. The G63 is more powerful, has off-road gear, and most importantly, is heavier. So, with all the odds in the G63’s favor, they started the round. To everyone’s surprise, the BMW X7 was able to tug it rather comfortably. This was probably because the low range turns off the stability control and the SUV lost all traction. The fact that it wears street tires doesn’t do it any good either.

So, for the next round, Mat decided to switch it back to the normal range mode so that the stability control can be engaged. The X7’s stability control was turned off to make it an even round. It started off better than the previous race with neither of them having the upper hand. But, not much later, the BMW X7 started to tug the G63. The latter resisted for a while, but then the system threw up a series of warnings which led them to stop the round. While the X7 couldn’t pull the G63 on its side, it sure got it pretty close to the cone, thus making the X7 the winner once again.
