Customer-bound examples of the 2020 Chevy C8 Corvette aren’t even in production yet, because the company is busy producing “captured test vehicles.” Be that as it may, two people have already been pulled over on the streets of Bowling Green, Kentucky for racing the Chevy C8 Corvette.

The New C8 Corvette Got Two GM Employees in Big Trouble, and Not Just at Work

On the night of January 8, 2020, GM employees Mark Derkatz and Alexander Thim were pulled over by Kentucky State Police after they were spotted racing two examples of the C8 Corvette up and down the street. As irony would have it, the street is named speed Lovers Lane.” According to reports from Automobile Magazine, the two GM employees were clocked doing more than 26 mph above the posted 45 mph speed limit, which means they were doing at least 71 mph in a 45 zone. Oops.

On the positive side of things, nobody crashed, nobody was injured, and the Corvettes remain intact. Those Corvettes, however, were towed and impounded by state police and were later released to GM representatives the next day. Derkatz and Thim are facing charges for the obvious, speeding, but also reckless driving, and racing motor vehicles on a public road. As for what fines and penalties that these two face, that remains to be seen, but exceeding the speed limit in Kentucky by 26 mph leads to at least a court hearing and a possible suspension. Tack on the reckless driving and racing charges, and both drivers could be in for some severe fines and, potentially, jail time if things really go south.

General Motors hasn’t said much about the whole incident outside of the following:

“We are aware of an incident involving our test vehicles and are currently investigating. Safety remains our overriding priority at General Motors. We have no further comment at this time.”

As of now, there’s no word about whether or not Derkatz and Thim are still employed, but we’re willing to bet that they’ve been released to the wild.
