Lotus has two new models in the planning stages, according to its CEO, Mike Kimberly.  In an interview with the magazine EVO, he confirmed that a new Esprit is under development, and has been for several years, to be introduced in late 2008.  Kimberly says the engine will be produced by “a very well respected prestige car maker.”

He didn’t specify whom that might be, but observers believe that it’s Aston Martin.  The car is expected to sell for about $140,000, so Aston prices are within reach.  Earlier speculation that it would be BMW powered are apparently now considered obsolete.

There is also to be a new 2 + 2 coupe being developed under the code name Project Eagle.  In price, it would come in between the Elise, Exige, Europa platform and the new Esprit.  EVO reported seeing the concept drawings or model and describes the vehicle as similar to a “Bertone-bodied Dino 308 GT4 with a modern Lotus twist.”  The chassis is an aluminum tub with fiberglass composite panels for the outer body.  A Toyota V-6 is the expected powerplant, putting out 300 hp or more, driving the rear wheels.

The 2 +2 will be on display at the London Motor Show in 2008 and go on sale in early 2009.
