Seen exercising at the Nurburgring, a very slightly disguised copy of the new BMW M3, which is expected to be publicly announced at the Frankfort Auto Show in September, appears to have a retractable roof. The roof has three segments, one connecting to the windshield header and extending to a point just behind the front seats, another from there to the top of the rear window, and a third which includes the rear window.

While retractable roofs have been popular in certain car lines since Mercedes-Benz because the first company to employ them since Ford in the fifties, they are heavier than either a standard fabric convertible top or a fixed steel roof. Apparently, however, BMW has concluded that the sporting character of the car will not be compromised by the additional weight. Expected to be powered by a 400 hp V-8, the M3 will have ample power.
